What is Being Made

The Trendsetter Yarns R Icon Fishtail Pullover is a knitted sweater designed by Barry Klein, featuring a distinctive fishtail lace pattern worked vertically down the center front and back. This pullover is constructed as a seamed garment available in four sizes: Small through Extra Large, with finished bust measurements of 36, 40, 44, and 48 inches respectively. The design incorporates 3 inches of positive ease for comfortable wear.

Construction Techniques

This pullover is worked using a combination of construction methods. The main body pieces are worked flat on straight needles in a bottom-up approach, beginning with the ribbed cuffs at the hem and progressing upward to the armholes. The garment pieces are subsequently seamed together to create the finished sweater. The collar, however, deviates from the flat construction method and is worked in the round using circular needles, allowing for seamless ribbing at the neckline.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs three primary stitch techniques:

Materials and Gauge

The recommended needles are U.S. Size #7 and #8, with the smaller size used for ribbed sections and the larger size for the main body. The gauge is established at 17 stitches over 4 inches when worked in Stockinette Stitch using the Size #8 needle with Icon yarn.

Pattern Details

The back and front panels are constructed identically, beginning with a cast-on of 79, 87, 95, or 103 stitches depending on size. After 1.5 inches of Small Rib Stitch, the pattern transitions to the main body arrangement: Stockinette Stitch on the outer edges flanking a centered 13-stitch Fishtail Stitch panel. The fishtail lace pattern repeats every 12 rows, creating a vertical design element that extends from the hem to the armhole. Armhole shaping begins at 16 inches from the cast-on edge and involves binding off stitches at the beginning of rows followed by strategic decreases worked in full-fashion to maintain clean edges.
