Product Description
Trendsetter Yarns U Wish Center Mitered A-Line Pullover
What is Being Made
This is a women's pullover sweater featuring an A-line silhouette with optional sleeves, designed by Barry Klein. The garment is sized to fit bust measurements of 33(37,41,46,49)" and is characterized by a distinctive center mitered construction that creates shaping through strategic decreases. The A-line design includes positive ease of 3" at the bust and 6" at the hip for a flattering swing bottom.
Construction Techniques
The sweater is worked using a combination of construction methods. The body is worked flat on straight needles in a bottom-up approach, with seaming used to finish the garment. The pattern incorporates both flat knitting and in-the-round techniques, allowing knitters flexibility in their approach. The center mitered decrease technique is the signature construction element, worked every 8(9,9,9,9) rows on the right side, repeated 7 times throughout the body.
The center mitered decrease is executed by working to the center 3 stitches, slipping 2 stitches as if to knit 2 together, knitting 1, and passing the 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch. This technique removes 2 stitches per decrease row and creates the tapered A-line shaping.
Optional sleeves are created by casting on 11 stitches at the beginning of rows when the body reaches 16(16½,17,17,17)" from the cast-on edge. The sleeve stitches are worked in small ribbing while the body continues in stockinette stitch, with sleeves extending to 7(7½,8,8,8)" in length.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch for the body, worked by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows, creating a smooth, classic fabric.
- Large Ribbing: Used for the initial 2" cuff at the cast-on edge, worked as *K3, P3* across the row, with stitches worked as they appear on the return row. This ribbing provides stretch and structure.
- Small Ribbing: Used for the optional sleeve sections, worked as *P1, K1* on right-side rows and *K1, P1* on wrong-side rows, creating a fitted cuff effect where sleeves meet the body.
- Center Mitered Decrease: A specialized decrease technique that removes 2 stitches per decrease row while creating the distinctive mitered line down the center front and back.
Materials and Gauge
The pattern calls for Trendsetter Yarns Wish yarn in color #169. Yardage requirements are 5(6,7,8,9) skeins of 50-gram weight for the body, with an additional 4(4,4,4,4) skeins of 50-gram weight for the optional sleeves. The recommended needle size is #7 and #8 U.S. needles, with #8 needles used for the main body in stockinette stitch. The gauge is 18 stitches equals 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch with #8 needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
Size Range and Finished Measurements
The pattern is available in five sizes: Small, Medium, Large, Extra-Large, and 1X, accommodating a range of body types. The finished bust measurements, including positive ease, range from 36(40,44,49,52)" across the five sizes.
