What Is Being Made

Techniques Used

The cardigan is constructed using bottom-up construction, meaning pieces are knitted from the lower edge upward. All pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and the finished pieces are seamed together to create the garment. The pattern incorporates strategic armhole shaping achieved through bind-offs at the beginning of rows followed by decreases worked every other row. This combination of techniques creates a fitted sleeve cap while maintaining the cardigan's structured silhouette.

Stitches Used

The Pure Love Multi Ribbed Cardigan features four distinct stitch patterns that create visual interest and texture:

• Small Rib Stitch (Sm. Rib St.): A basic alternating knit and purl pattern (K1, P1) worked on alternating rows to create a classic ribbed texture.
• Stockinette Stitch (Stock St.): Knit on right-side rows and purl on wrong-side rows, creating a smooth, flat fabric commonly used as a base stitch in many knitting patterns.
• Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev Stock St.): The reverse of stockinette, with purl stitches on the right side and knit stitches on the wrong side, creating a bumpy, textured appearance on the front of the fabric.
• Wide Rib Stitch: A more pronounced rib pattern combining knit and purl columns (P1-3, K2, P6, K2) that creates vertical lines and elasticity. This stitch is used at the lower edge and upper sections of the garment.
• Corrugated Rib Stitch: An alternating pattern of 2 rows of stockinette followed by 6 rows of reverse stockinette, repeated five times. This creates a distinctive horizontal striping effect with alternating smooth and textured bands.

Materials

The cardigan is knitted with Trendsetter Yarns Pure Love yarn (color #91), requiring 5 to 10 skeins of 100-gram weight depending on the size being made. Knitting needles in U.S. sizes #8 and #9 are used throughout the pattern. The gauge is established at 18 stitches equals 4 inches when working stockinette stitch with the #9 needle and Pure Love yarn, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
