Trendsetter Yarns Dune - Lace Wave Scarf or Wrap

Project Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern creates an elegant lace scarf or wrap featuring the signature Lace Wave stitch. Designed by Barry Klein, the pattern offers two finished size options to suit different preferences and yarn availability. The finished scarf measures 10" x 76", while the wrap version is 19" x 76", both worked in a seamless, flat construction from bottom to top.

What Is Being Made

The Lace Wave Scarf/Wrap is a lightweight, openwork accessory perfect for layering or draping. The lace pattern creates an airy, wave-like texture that showcases the yarn's characteristics while maintaining elegant drape and movement. This versatile design works equally well as a narrow scarf for delicate layering or as a wider wrap for more substantial coverage.

Techniques Used

  • Bottom-up construction: The piece is cast on and worked upward to the desired length, allowing for easy customization based on available yarn
  • Seamless, flat knitting: The entire project is worked flat on straight needles with no seaming required, simplifying the construction process
  • Yarn over increases: Multiple yarn overs create the lace openwork effect throughout the pattern
  • Selective stitch dropping: The pattern requires careful dropping of yarn over wraps while preserving knit stitches to maintain pattern integrity

Stitches Used

Lace Wave Stitch: This is the primary decorative stitch used throughout the project. The four-row repeat pattern alternates between rows featuring multiple yarn overs (Yo) worked at varying intervals and plain knit rows where the yarn overs are dropped to create the lace effect. The stitch sequence includes single yarn overs, double yarn overs (Yo-2x), and triple yarn overs (Yo-3x) positioned strategically to form the characteristic wave pattern. The pattern repeat is clearly marked with asterisks (*to*) for easy tracking across rows.

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: Trendsetter Dune, requiring 3 skeins (6 skeins for the larger wrap size) of 50-gram balls. The yarn color number in the pattern may differ slightly from currently available options, so color matching should be verified at time of purchase.

Needles: U.S. size #10.5 straight needles for working flat construction.

Gauge: 10 stitches measure 4 inches when worked in the Lace Wave stitch with the specified yarn and needle size. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions.

Cast-on: 26 stitches for the scarf version or 46 stitches for the wrap version, cast on loosely but evenly to ensure consistent edge quality. Three garter stitch rows (knit rows) are worked before transitioning to the Lace Wave pattern.

Pattern Structure

After the initial three garter stitch rows establishing the edge, the Lace Wave stitch pattern is repeated continuously until the desired length is achieved, approximately 75 inches or until sufficient yarn remains to complete three final knit rows and bind off. This flexible length approach accommodates variations in yarn weight and allows crafters to use their materials efficiently.
