Trendsetter Yarns Tiger - Wide Striped Classic "V" Pullover
What Is Being Made
This is a classic pullover sweater featuring a distinctive wide striped pattern created with color changes throughout the garment. The design includes a V-shaped neckline at the front and a straight body silhouette. The sweater is available in five sizes ranging from Small to 1X, with finished bust measurements of 37, 41, 45, 49, and 53 inches respectively. The pullover is designed by Barry Klein and uses Trendsetter Yarns Tiger yarn in multiple coordinating colors to create bold, eye-catching horizontal stripes.
Techniques Used
This sweater is constructed using a bottom-up seamed method, meaning the back and front pieces are knitted separately from the cast-on edge upward, then assembled. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, with the exception of the sleeves which are picked up from the body edges and worked in the round. The design incorporates color-work striping, where different yarn colors are introduced at specific measurements to create horizontal stripes across the entire piece. The V-neckline is shaped using full fashion decreases, a technique that creates decorative decreases visible on the finished garment for a refined appearance.
Stitches Used
- Ribbed Stitch (Rib St.): An alternating knit and purl pattern (K1, P1) worked on the wrong side as stitches appear. This elastic stitch is used for the lower edge ribbing, which measures 1½ inches and helps the sweater fit snugly at the hem.
- Stockinette Stitch (Stock St.): The primary stitch used throughout the body and sleeves, created by knitting all stitches on right-side rows and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows. This creates the smooth, classic fabric that showcases the striped color pattern.
- K2-tog (Knit Two Together): A right-leaning decrease used on the right side of the V-neckline.
- SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit): A left-leaning decrease used on the left side of the V-neckline to create balanced, full-fashion shaping.
Materials and Gauge
The sweater is knitted with Trendsetter Yarns Tiger in four coordinating colors: #74/A, #76/B, #75/C, and #46/D. Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 2 to 4 skeins of 50-gram weight per color depending on the size being made. The pattern calls for U.S. knitting needles in sizes #7 and #8, with the smaller needle used for the ribbed cuff and the larger needle for the body and sleeves. The gauge is 19 stitches over 4 inches when working Stockinette Stitch with the #8 needle, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
Construction Details
The back piece is cast on and worked in ribbing for 1½ inches before switching to Stockinette Stitch. The color stripes are introduced at specific intervals: the first color change occurs at 6¼ inches from the cast-on edge, the second at 12½ inches, the third at 18¾ inches, with the final color completing the piece. Sleeve pickup markers are placed at 15 to 16 inches from the cast-on edge (depending on size) to indicate where the sleeves will be picked up later. The back is completed when it measures 23 to 25½ inches from the cast-on edge.
The front is worked identically to the back until 14 to 16½ inches from the cast-on edge, at which point the work is divided in half to begin the V-neckline shaping. The neck decreases are worked in full fashion style, meaning they are paired decreases (K2-tog on one side, SSK on the other) that create a decorative column of decreases. A total of 20 decreases are made on each side of the V, worked on every right-side row, creating a gradual and elegant neckline.
After the shoulder seams are sewn closed, stitches are picked up along the side edges between the sleeve markers to create the sleeves. These stitches are worked in Stockinette Stitch with decreases to shape the sleeve cap, creating a fitted sleeve that tapers toward the cuff.
