Trendsetter Yarns T Candyland & Dune - Mitered Striped Cardigan
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a mitered striped cardigan designed by Jan Runkel for Just Jan Designs. The garment features a long, rectangular body with distinctive mitered corners created through strategic decreases. Available in five sizes to fit bust measurements of 38, 42, 46, 50, and 54 inches, this cardigan combines colorwork striping with geometric construction techniques for a contemporary design.
What Is Being Made
A seamed cardigan with a rectangular silhouette and mitered construction. The back is worked in two separate pieces that are later merged together, while the overall design emphasizes clean lines and geometric shaping through the use of mitered corners throughout the garment.
Techniques Used
- Mitered construction: The pattern uses double decrease stitches (CDD) positioned at strategic corners to create distinctive V-shaped miters that form the geometric structure of the cardigan
- Seamed construction: Pieces are worked separately and then seamed together
- Worked flat: The garment is constructed using flat knitting on straight needles rather than circular needles
- Striped colorwork: Two-row stripes alternate between the two yarn colors throughout the pattern
- Yarn carrying: Yarns are carried up between stripe sections to maintain continuity
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: Knit on right-side rows and purl on wrong-side rows, used in alternating two-row stripes
- Garter Stitch: Knit on every row, used in alternating two-row stripes to create textural contrast
- Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1) used for finishing edges
- Double Decrease (CDD): A centered double decrease created by slipping two stitches as if to knit together, knitting one stitch, then passing the slipped stitches over the knit stitch. This stitch is worked on right-side rows and creates the prominent V-shaped miters that define the cardigan's geometric design
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern uses two Trendsetter Yarns colors worked in alternating stripes. Trendsetter Candyland #2924 (Color A) requires 5, 5, 5, 5, or 6 fifty-gram skeins depending on size. Trendsetter Dune #107 (Color B) requires 7, 7, 8, 8, or 9 fifty-gram skeins depending on size. The stripe pattern alternates two rows of Candyland in Stockinette Stitch with two rows of Dune in Garter Stitch.
Needles: U.S. size #10.5 knitting needles are used throughout the pattern. The gauge is 14 stitches equals 4 inches when worked in the striped stitch pattern with the specified needles and yarns.
Construction Details
The back piece begins with a knitted or cable cast on of 149 to 186 stitches depending on size. The pattern is worked from the top edge down through the body length to the bottom edge. Double decreases are strategically placed to create miters at the corners, with the remaining stitches bound off at completion. The distinctive feature of this construction is the visible V-shaped miter created by the CDD stitch on the right side of the fabric, which serves as a visual guide for stitch placement and creates the geometric aesthetic of the finished cardigan.
