Trendsetter Yarns D Impress & Nuance Arrow Eyelet Striped Wrap

What Is Being Made

This is a rectangular wrap measuring 16 inches wide by 80 inches long, designed by Barry Klein. The wrap combines two distinct Trendsetter Yarns colorways—Impress and Nuance—in a striped construction that alternates between lace eyelet sections and reverse stockinette stripes. The finished piece is a versatile accessory suitable for draping across the shoulders or wearing as a shawlette.

Yarn and Materials

The wrap uses two contrasting yarns from Trendsetter Yarns:

  • Main Color (MC): Impress #105, requiring 2 skeins of 150 grams each
  • Contrast Color (CC): Nuance #100, requiring 2 skeins of 100 grams each

Both yarns are noted to shade and change colors throughout, requiring careful attention when working from the ball to observe how colors run and whether to work from the outside or inside of each skein. Knitting needles in U.S. size #6 are used for the main fabric construction, with an E-size crochet hook for finishing edging.

Techniques and Construction

This wrap is worked flat in a seamless construction, beginning with a cast-on of 114 stitches and building length through repeating stripe patterns. The design employs lace techniques through eyelet decreases and yarn overs that create openwork sections, balanced with solid reverse stockinette stripes for visual contrast and structural stability.

The pattern alternates between two distinct stripe sections. Stripe 1 features the arrow eyelet lace pattern worked over 8 rows with the contrast color, creating a directional motif through strategically placed yarn overs and decreases (both standard and through-the-back-loop decreases). Stripe 2 uses the main color in reverse stockinette stitch, worked over 18 rows to create a solid section that frames the lace.

Stitches Used

Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev. Stock St.): The primary stitch for solid stripe sections, worked by purling on right-side rows and knitting on wrong-side rows, creating a textured surface with bumps facing outward.

Lace Eyelet Stitches: The arrow pattern incorporates the following techniques:

  • Knit 2 Together (K2-tog): A right-leaning decrease used to shape the arrow point
  • Knit 2 Together Through the Back Loop (K2-tog/tbl): A left-leaning decrease that balances the right-leaning decreases for symmetrical arrow shaping
  • Yarn Over (Yo): Creates the eyelet openings that define the lace pattern and compensate for the decreases, maintaining stitch count

The arrow eyelet pattern expands and contracts across the 8-row repeat, with yarn overs increasing in number as decreases move closer together, creating a directional arrow or chevron visual effect. Garter stitch edges (knit stitches on both sides) frame the pattern repeat at the beginning and end of each row for selvage definition.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 26 stitches over 4 inches using U.S. size #6 needles with Impress yarn in reverse stockinette stitch. The finished wrap measures 16 inches in width by a minimum of 80 inches in length, though the pattern allows for extension to desired length by repeating the stripe sequence.

Finishing

After binding off, yarn tails are buried into the fabric. A single crochet edge is worked around the entire perimeter of the wrap using either yarn color, followed by a reverse single crochet row to create a finished, polished border that frames the lace and striped sections.
