Trendsetter Yarns K Candyland – Vertical Slip Garter Rib Triangle Shawl
What Is Being Made
This is a triangle shawl designed by Barry Klein, featuring a finished size of 60 inches wide by 29 inches deep. The shawl is worked sideways rather than from the point upward, creating a unique construction method that allows for easy color management and visual interest throughout the knitting process.
Techniques Used
The shawl is created using seamless, flat knitting techniques. The pattern is worked in a sideways orientation, which means you cast on a full 111 stitches and work horizontally across the width of the triangle. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreases worked at the end of right-side rows, reducing one stitch per right-side row until only 3 stitches remain, at which point the piece is bound off. This construction method allows crafters to easily adjust color placement by choosing to work skeins from the inside or outside as desired, taking advantage of the yarn's natural color variations.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern is the Slip Garter Rib Stitch, which creates texture and visual depth through a combination of knit and slip stitches. The stitch pattern repeats as follows:
- Row 1 (Right Side): Knit 6 stitches, slip 1 stitch with yarn in back, repeating this sequence to the end and finishing with knit 6
- Row 2 (Wrong Side): Knit 6 stitches, purl 1 stitch, repeating this sequence to the end and finishing with knit 6
When slipping stitches, they are always slipped as if to purl. The garter stitch sections become visually apparent after approximately 6 rows of knitting, at which point the relationship between the slipped stitches on the right side and the purled stitches on the wrong side becomes clear.
Materials
This pattern calls for Trendsetter Yarns Candyland in colorway #2922, requiring 4 skeins of 50-gram weight. The yarn is worked on U.S. Size 10.5 knitting needles. The gauge is 11 stitches over 4 inches when worked in the Slip Garter Rib Stitch with the specified needle size. Candyland is a variegated yarn with colors that change from skein to skein and are not in a consistent color sequence, making each project unique and allowing crafters creative control over color placement and flow throughout the shawl.
