Trendsetter Yarns J Pavlova Stitch Striped Pullover

What Is Being Made

The J Pavlova Stitch Striped Pullover is a classic knit sweater designed by Barry Klein featuring a sophisticated color-blocked striped pattern. This pullover is constructed with a straight body silhouette and drop shoulder sleeves, offering a relaxed, contemporary fit. The sweater is available in five sizes ranging from Small to 1X, fitting bust measurements from 37 inches to 57 inches with ease included. The design showcases the unique slow color-changing properties of Trendsetter Pavlova yarn, creating subtle visual interest throughout the garment.

Techniques Used

This pullover employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for easy pattern manipulation and construction. The pieces are seamed together after completion, which is a traditional method for joining knit components. The sweater is constructed using the bottom-up approach, beginning with the ribbed cuffs at the lower edge and working upward toward the shoulders. The striped pattern is created through strategic color blocking and stitch pattern alternation, with the designer choosing to work the slow color-changing yarn directly from the ball to appreciate its subtle shifts rather than introducing additional color play through multiple yarn strands.

Stitches Used

  • Rib Stitch – Used for the lower edge ribbing that provides stretch and structure. Worked as *K1, P1* (knit one, purl one) on the first row, with subsequent rows worked to maintain the established pattern of stitches as they appear.
  • Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch used throughout most of the sweater body. Worked on the right side by knitting across the row and on the wrong side by purling across the row, creating the classic smooth V-pattern texture.
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch – Used as part of the striped pattern repeat to create visual contrast and depth. Worked opposite to standard stockinette, with purling on the right side and knitting on the wrong side, producing a bumpy, textured appearance.
  • Stitch Stripe Pattern – A repeating sequence of *4 rows Reverse Stockinette Stitch, 4 rows Stockinette Stitch* that creates the distinctive striped effect. This pattern is worked on one half of the back and front pieces while the opposite half is worked in standard stockinette, then reversed on each side of a center stitch marker for symmetrical visual balance.

Materials and Tools

The pullover is knit using Trendsetter Pavlova yarn, a specialty yarn known for its slow color-changing properties. The pattern requires 4, 5, 6, or 7 skeins depending on size, with each skein weighing 100 grams. U.S. Knitting Needles size #5 and #6 are required – the smaller #5 needles are used for the initial ribbed cuffs, while the larger #6 needles are used for the main body and pattern work. The gauge is established at 20 stitches over 4 inches when working Pavlova yarn in stockinette stitch on the #6 needle, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
