Tuscan Wrap in Rowan Mohair Soft

What is Being Made

The Tuscan is a luxurious knitted wrap designed by Quail Studio, featuring a long, rectangular silhouette perfect for layering and styling. The finished wrap measures 51 centimeters (20 inches) wide and 200 centimeters (78¾ inches) long, excluding decorative tassels. This generous length makes it versatile for wearing as a shoulder wrap, shawl, or draped accessory, while the moderate width provides comfortable coverage without overwhelming bulk.

Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly knitting project combines several foundational techniques to create visual interest and structure. The wrap features moss stitch (also called seed stitch), which creates a textured, bumpy fabric by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern. The main body of the wrap transitions into stocking stitch (stockinette stitch), the most fundamental knit fabric, which produces smooth, even rows of V-shaped stitches on the right side.

An I-cord edging frames both long sides of the wrap, providing a neat, finished appearance and preventing curling. The wrap employs a color-blocking stripe sequence, where different yarn colors are introduced in measured intervals to create distinct horizontal bands throughout the length. Tassel finishing adds decorative flair to both the cast-on and cast-off edges, created using a crochet hook to attach grouped yarn strands securely to the wrap's edges.

Stitches Used

  • Moss Stitch: A reversible textured stitch created by alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1 repeat), used for the initial 3-centimeter border at the beginning of the wrap
  • Stocking Stitch: The primary stitch for the main body, consisting of alternating rows of knit (on right side) and purl (on wrong side) stitches, creating a smooth, classic fabric
  • I-cord Edging: A tubular cord created by slipping stitches at the beginning and end of rows, forming neat selvage edges on both sides of the wrap
  • Slip Stitch: Used throughout to slip stitches knitwise at the edges, maintaining the I-cord edging structure

Materials and Tools

This project uses Rowan Mohair Soft yarn, a luxurious fiber blend ideal for creating soft, draping wraps. The pattern calls for four coordinating colors from the Mohair Soft range: Winter (50-gram ball, quantity 3), Pampus (50-gram ball, quantity 2), Chocolate (50-gram ball, quantity 1), and Whisper (50-gram ball, quantity 1). The mohair fiber provides exceptional softness and a subtle halo effect, making the finished wrap feel indulgent against the skin.

Knitting requires 8-millimeter (US size 11) needles to work with the mohair yarn at the correct gauge. The pattern specifies a tension of 12 stitches and 18 rows per 10 centimeters measured over stocking stitch, ensuring proper fabric drape and finished dimensions. Additionally, a crochet hook is needed for the tassel-finishing step, where yarn strands are securely attached to the wrap's edges using a simple crochet technique.

Pattern Structure and Progression

The Tuscan begins with casting on 62 stitches and working a 3-centimeter moss stitch border with I-cord edges to establish the wrap's foundation. The knitter then transitions into the main color-block sequence, working in stocking stitch while changing yarn colors at specified intervals: Yarn B for 12.5 centimeters, Yarn C for 4 centimeters, and Yarn D for 12.5 centimeters. This stripe pattern repeats throughout the wrap's 200-centimeter length, creating a rhythmic, modern aesthetic.

The wrap concludes with a moss stitch border matching the beginning, providing visual balance and structure. After blocking to correct measurements, 54 tassel strands in each of the four yarn colors are grouped and attached to both the cast-on and cast-off edges using a crochet hook, adding movement and a finished, professional appearance to the completed wrap.
