What is Being Made
Alinea is a women's pullover sweater designed by Sandi Rosner and published by Twist Collective. This garment features a distinctive construction method that begins with a horizontal band knit around the center of the torso, creating a unique silhouette. The sweater is available in seven sizes ranging from 32" to 56" bust circumference, with finished measurements from 81.5 cm to 142 cm. The garment is intended to be worn with 2–4" (5–10 cm) of ease for a comfortable fit. The length ranges from 22 ½" to 31 ½" (57 cm to 80 cm) depending on size.
Construction Techniques
Alinea employs a sophisticated mixed-method construction that combines both flat and circular knitting techniques. The sweater begins with a long strip knit flat that forms a band around the center of the torso. The two ends of this strip are grafted together using Kitchener stitch, a technique that creates an invisible seam. Removable stitch markers are placed at the grafted seam and at the halfway point to indicate the side "seams" of the garment.
Once the central band is complete, stitches are strategically picked up along one edge of the band to create the Upper Back and Front sections. The shoulders are shaped using short rows, which allow for three-dimensional shaping without increasing or decreasing stitches. The shoulder seams are then joined using a 3-needle bind-off, a technique that creates a sturdy, finished edge while simultaneously binding off two sets of live stitches.
Stitches are picked up along the opposite edge of the central band to work the Lower Front and Back sections downward. The sleeves are created by picking up stitches at the armholes and are knit in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming these pieces. This combination of seamless and worked-flat techniques creates a garment with minimal seaming while maintaining design flexibility.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern used throughout Alinea is the Ridge Pattern, which is worked in two variations depending on the section being knit. The Ridge Pattern creates a textured fabric with alternating rows of knit and purl stitches that produce visible horizontal ridges.
Ridge Pattern in Rows (used for flat-knit sections): This pattern repeats over 4 rows. Row 1 (Right Side) and Row 3 are worked entirely in knit stitches. Row 2 (Wrong Side) is knit. Row 4 is purled. This sequence is repeated as needed, creating a subtle textured effect on the flat-knit sections of the garment.
Ridge Pattern in the Round (used for circular sections): This variation adapts the flat pattern for seamless knitting. Round 1 is knit. Round 2 is purled. Rounds 3 and 4 are knit. This 4-round repeat creates a similar ridge texture when working in the round, maintaining visual consistency across the garment while accommodating the different construction method used for the sleeves.
Materials
Alinea is designed to be knit with Classic Elite Yarns Liberty Wool, a washable wool yarn that offers both durability and easy care. Liberty Wool is spun at 122 yards per 111 meters per 1 ¾ ounce (50 gram) ball, providing a worsted-weight yarn suitable for sweater construction. The yardage requirements range from 8 balls for the smallest size to 18 balls for the largest size, totaling approximately 976 to 2,196 yards depending on the finished size selected. The yarn shown in the pattern is color #7849 Lapis, a blue shade.
Needles required include two size 7 US (4.5 mm) circular needles, each 24 inches (60 cm) long, for working the flat sections and picking up stitches. Additional size 7 US (4.5 mm) needles in the knitter's preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round are needed for the sleeve sections. Needle size should be adjusted if necessary to obtain the correct gauge for the yarn being used, ensuring proper fit and fabric characteristics in the finished garment.
