Construction Techniques

Both the hat and mittens are worked seamlessly in the round from the bottom up, eliminating the need for seaming. The mittens feature individual left and right versions with shaped thumbs. The colorwork patterns are presented in chart form only, requiring knitters to follow visual stitch-by-stitch instructions rather than written row-by-row directions.

Stranded Colorwork Method: The pattern employs stranded knitting, a technique where two colors are worked simultaneously. To maintain even fabric and prevent distortion, the pattern notes that floats (the yarn strands carried across the back of the work) should not exceed 3–5 stitches in length. Knitters are instructed to keep stitches spread out on the needles while working to avoid bunching and to maintain the strand not in use at the start of the round, eliminating the need to break yarn between color changes.

Mitten Construction Details: The mittens are constructed with a ribbed cuff worked in alternating knit and purl stitches, followed by the colorwork hand section. The thumb is worked separately using stitches held on waste yarn, then grafted using the Kitchener stitch for a seamless join. Additional stitches are picked up from the edge between the hand and thumb to close any gaps.

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for Lorna's Laces Hand-Dyed Yarns Shepherd Sock, a fingering-weight yarn with 430 yards per 3 ½ oz hank. The fiber content is 80% Superwash Merino Wool and 20% Nylon, providing durability and easy care. One hank each of two colorways is required: #58ns Kerfuffle (main color) and #65ns Putty (contrast color).

Needles: Size 1 US / 2.25 mm needles in the preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round are required for both the hat and mittens. A 16" / 40 cm circular needle is specified for the hat. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Additional supplies include a stitch marker, waste yarn for holding stitches, and a tapestry needle for grafting and weaving in ends.
