What Is Being Made

Decalage is an asymmetrical pullover sweater designed by Solène Le Roux. This knitted garment features a striking cable pattern placement on the front, creating visual interest through an off-center design. The pullover is available in eight sizes, ranging from 36 ¼ inches to 64 inches in bust measurement, with finished lengths between 24 ¼ and 27 ¼ inches. The design is intended to be worn with 2–4 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Techniques

Decalage employs a mixed construction method combining circular and flat knitting techniques. The body is worked bottom-up in the round from the cast-on edge to the underarms, establishing the main fabric and initial shaping. Once the underarm is reached, the Front and Back are worked separately back and forth in rows, allowing for independent shaping of each section. The Sleeves are similarly constructed in the round to the underarms, then the sleeve caps are worked flat for the final shaping. This hybrid approach provides both the efficiency of circular knitting for the main body sections and the control of flat knitting for tailored shaping.

The garment is seamed to join the various sections together. Cable charts are integrated into the pattern and are worked both in the round and back and forth. When working in the round, every row of the chart is read from right to left. When working back and forth, right-side rows are read from right to left while wrong-side rows are read from left to right.

Stitches and Cable Patterns

The sweater begins with a K1, P1 ribbed edge worked over 10 rounds, creating a fitted neckline and waistband. The primary stitch pattern throughout the body is stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic knit fabric that allows the cable work to stand out prominently.

Cable patterns are the defining feature of this design. A large cable motif is placed asymmetrically on one side of the front, creating the sweater's distinctive visual impact. Two smaller cables run up each sleeve. All cable patterns are presented in chart form only, requiring knitters to follow visual charting rather than written instructions. The cable placement and sizing contribute to the sweater's contemporary, fashion-forward aesthetic.

Shaping is achieved through decrease stitches, including ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) techniques, worked strategically to create the fitted silhouette and sleeve cap shaping.

Materials

The suggested yarn for Decalage is Rowan Felted Tweed Aran, a worsted-weight yarn composed of 50% Merino Wool, 25% Alpaca, and 25% Viscose.
