What is Being Made

Esplanade is a bottom-up knit sweater designed by Sandi Rosner and published by Twist Collective. This garment features a classic pullover construction with horizontal stripes worked throughout the body. The sweater is available in seven sizes, ranging from 32 inches to 56 inches bust measurement, with finished lengths between 21¼ and 26¼ inches, making it suitable for a range of body types. The design is intended to be worn with 2–4 inches of ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Techniques

Esplanade employs a seamed, worked-flat construction method for the main body pieces. The sweater is knit in separate pieces—the back, front, and sleeves—from the bottom up using flat knitting on circular needles. Once all pieces are completed, they are sewn together to create the finished garment. After seaming, the design incorporates an additional step: provisional cast-on stitches are removed and the lower edging is worked in the round from the top down, creating a finished hem. The neckband stitches are picked up and worked in the round to complete the neckline.

A key technique note for the stripe work: when changing colors on the back piece, the yarn is not broken. Instead, the color not currently in use is carried loosely along the edge of the piece, reducing the number of ends to weave in and maintaining continuity in the stripe pattern.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knit stitches combined with strategic decreases to shape the garment:

• Knit (K) and Purl (P): The primary stitches forming the stockinette stitch body of the sweater
• K2, P2 Rib: Used for both the lower edging (worked in the round) and the neckband. This ribbed stitch is worked as a multiple of 4 stitches, alternating 2 knit stitches with 2 purl stitches to create vertical columns that provide stretch and recovery
• Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK) and Knit 2 Together (K2tog): Left-leaning and right-leaning decreases used symmetrically at the edges (k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1) to shape the garment pieces

Materials and Yarn

The suggested yarn for Esplanade is HiKoo Sueño, a premium blend containing 80% Merino Superwash and 20% Viscose from Bamboo. Each hank yields 255 yards (233 meters) and weighs 3½ ounces (100 grams). The yardage requirements vary by size: smaller sizes (32–40 inches) require 8–9 hanks in the primary color (1110 Grey, designated as color A) and 2 hanks in the secondary color (1111 Cream, designated as color B), while larger sizes (44–56 inches) require 4–5 hanks of color A and 3–4 hanks of color B. The Merino Superwash component ensures easy care and durability, while the bamboo viscose adds softness and a subtle sheen to the finished fabric.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern calls for Size 6 US (4 mm) circular needles. Two needle lengths are required: a longer circular needle (24–32 inches, 60–80 cm) for working the main body pieces flat, and a shorter 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle for working the edgings and neckband in the round. A longer circular needle is also used with waste yarn to create the provisional cast-on at the beginning of the back piece. Knitters should adjust needle size as necessary to obtain the correct gauge specified in the pattern.
