What Is Being Made

The Mangrove is a top-down, seamless knitted shawl worked from the center outward. This design creates a seven-segment shawl that is slightly larger than a traditional half-circle shawl, with a finished radius of approximately 28 inches (71 cm) from the center point to the furthest edge. The shawl is worked flat on circular needles, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking a sophisticated wrap with geometric construction.

Techniques Used

This shawl employs several advanced knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance and structure:

• Top-down construction: The shawl begins at the center with a small cast-on and expands outward through strategic increases
• Center-out increases: Increases occur every 6th row throughout the charted sections, allowing the shawl to grow evenly from the center point
• Seamless knitting: The design requires no seaming, as it is constructed as a single continuous piece
• Worked flat: Despite using circular needles, the shawl is worked back and forth in flat rows rather than in the round
• Cable work: Cables are integrated into the design to add textural interest and visual depth

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Mangrove uses charted stitch patterns to guide construction. The pattern includes a Set-up Chart showing both right-side and wrong-side rows to establish the foundation. Charts A, B, and C contain the primary stitch patterns and feature repeat sections: a larger red repeat worked three times, followed by a smaller blue repeat worked once in each chart. Column 1 is worked at both the start and end of every row. Charts B and C show right-side rows only, with wrong-side rows worked in established pattern by knitting knit stitches and purling purl stitches as they appear, with yarn-overs worked as charted. The shawl concludes with a Stretchy Bind-Off that uses approximately 310 yards of yarn.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The suggested yarn is North Light Fibers Spring Street in the Goldenrod colorway. This yarn is 100% Falkland Island's Wool, with each skein containing 310 yards (283 meters) and weighing 2½ ounces (71 grams). Two skeins are recommended for this project. A Yarn Usage Chart is provided to help knitters monitor yardage consumption at specific waypoints throughout construction, ensuring sufficient yarn remains to complete the project.

Needles: A US Size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle measuring 60 inches (150 cm) long or longer is required. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to obtain correct gauge.

Additional Notions and Gauge

Recommended notions include stitch markers (optional), a cable needle for cable work, cotton thread for a lifeline (optional), a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and blocking supplies. The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. At the end of the Set-up Chart, the shawl measures 5 rows and 28 stitches.
