Twist Collective Mill Creek: Knitted Cowls, Hats, and Mittens Set

What is Being Made

The Twist Collective Mill Creek is a coordinated three-piece knitted accessory set designed by Sierra Morningstar. This collection includes a hat, cowl, and mittens that can be made as a complete set or individually. Each piece features a distinctive slip-stitch mosaic pattern worked in two contrasting colors, creating a sophisticated textured design suitable for everyday wear.

Hat Specifications

Finished Measurements: The hat features a brim circumference of 17 ¼ inches (44 cm) and a total height of 9 inches (23 cm), making it a standard adult-sized winter hat.

Cowl Specifications

Finished Measurements: The cowl is designed with a circumference of 24 ½ inches (62 cm) and a height of 8 ¾ inches (22 cm), creating a versatile neckwarmer that can be worn as a single or double loop.

Mittens Specifications

Finished Measurements: The mittens are sized to fit hands with a circumference of 7 ½ inches (19 cm) and extend to a length of 9 ½ inches (24 cm) for full wrist coverage.

Construction Techniques

All three pieces in the Mill Creek set are worked seamlessly in the round from the bottom up, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a polished finished product. This bottom-up, in-the-round construction method is ideal for creating garments with a professional appearance and consistent gauge throughout.

The collection features a slip-stitch mosaic pattern, a stranded colorwork technique that creates visual texture and interest without the complexity of traditional fair isle knitting. The mosaic pattern is presented in chart form, with each row on the chart representing two rounds of knitting. The color key on the right side of the chart indicates which color should be knitted and which stitches should be slipped with yarn held in back, simplifying the colorwork process for knitters of various skill levels.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

  • Slip-stitch mosaic pattern: Created by alternating knit stitches in the main color with slipped stitches in the contrasting color, held with yarn in back (wyib). This technique builds texture and visual pattern without requiring the knitter to manage multiple colors in a single row.
  • Ribbing: The hat begins with a K1, P1 rib for 1 inch (2.5 cm), providing elasticity and a finished edge at the brim.
  • Decreases: The mittens incorporate k2tog (knit two together) decreases worked at regular intervals to shape the hand and create the proper fit.
  • Stranded colorwork: The two-color design is managed through stranding, where the contrasting color is carried along the inside of the work while stitches are slipped, creating a neat interior finish.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Mill Creek set is designed to be worked in Green Mountain Spinnery Alpaca Elegance, a luxury blend yarn combining 50% wool and 50% alpaca. Each skein contains 180 yards (165 meters) and weighs 2 ounces (58 grams). The pattern calls for two colors: Cream as the main color (MC) and Dark Roast as the contrasting color (CC).

Yarn quantities for the complete set as pictured: 2 skeins of Cream (MC) and 3 skeins of Dark Roast (CC). For individual projects, 1 skein of each color is sufficient to make either the hat or the mittens, while the cowl requires 1 skein of Cream and 2 skeins of Dark Roast.

Needles and Tools

The hat is worked on multiple needle sizes to accommodate different gauges across the project. A size 5 US (3.75 mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40 cm) is used for the ribbed brim, while a size 6 US (4 mm) circular needle in the same length is used for the body. The pattern also specifies size 6 US (4 mm) needles in the knitter's preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round, which may include double-pointed needles or a smaller circular needle as needed.
