What is Being Made

Mishmash is a pair of seamless mittens designed by Barbara Gregory, worked in the round from the bottom up. These mittens feature a finished hand circumference of 8 inches (20.5 cm), a hand length of 7½ inches (19 cm), and a total length of 9½ inches (24 cm). The pattern includes instructions for three distinct colorwork versions, each offering a unique visual design through stranded colorwork techniques.

Techniques Used

The mittens are constructed using several key knitting techniques that create both structural integrity and visual interest:

• Bottom-up construction: The mittens are worked from the cuff upward, allowing for easy adjustments to length as you knit
• Seamless, in-the-round knitting: Worked continuously in the round to eliminate seaming, creating a smooth, finished garment
• Stranded colorwork: Multiple colors are carried across the back of the work to create patterned designs on the mitten surface. The pattern emphasizes maintaining loose floats (the strands on the back) to prevent the fabric from pulling in and becoming inelastic. Floats should be caught when they extend farther than 5 stitches on the hand or 3 stitches on the thumb, with these catch points staggered across rounds to avoid trapping unused colors in the same location
• Thumb gusset: A separate thumb is created by placing stitches on waste yarn during the hand section and working them later

Stitches Used

The pattern works with a total of 101 stitches across the completed mitten. The cuff begins with a cast-on of 62 stitches worked on smaller needles, with increases worked throughout rounds 1–26 to reach the final stitch count. The construction uses standard knit stitches throughout, with the colorwork pattern created by changing yarn colors according to provided charts rather than using specialty stitches.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for Dragonfly Fibers Djinni, a yarn composition of 80% Superwash Merino, 10% Cashmere, and 10% Nylon. One full skein (420 yards / 384 meters per 4¼ ounces / 119 grams) serves as the main color, with three mini skeins (100 yards / 91 meters per 1 ounce / 28 grams each) providing contrast colors. One full skein and three mini skeins is sufficient yardage to complete all three mitten versions.

Two colorway options are provided: The blue colorway uses Catelyn as the main color with Mermaid, Forget Me Knot, and Green Tea as contrast colors. The red colorway features Wine Country as the main color with Pumpkin Head, Golden Compass, and Sea Star as contrast colors.

Needles: US Size 1 / 2.25 mm needles in the preferred style for small circumference knitting. The pattern accommodates multiple needle styles, allowing knitters to work on double-pointed needles, two circular needles, or one long circular needle using the Magic Loop method.

Pattern Notes

Chart rounds are worked from right to left in the traditional manner. To maintain even tension during stranded colorwork, stitches should be spread apart on the right-hand needle while working. The pattern provides three distinct colorwork chart versions (A, B, and C), with version A instructions shown in the main text and versions B and C indicated in parentheses throughout.
