What is Being Made

Radius is a knitted sweater designed by Julie Blauw, available in seven sizes ranging from 32" to 53 ¼" bust measurement. This garment is a versatile pullover intended to be worn with 1–2" of positive ease, making it suitable for layering or a relaxed fit. The finished length ranges from 25 ½" to 28 ½" depending on size, offering options for different proportions and style preferences.

Construction and Techniques

Radius employs a sophisticated multi-method construction approach that combines several knitting techniques:

• Flat Knitting: The body is worked flat in one piece from the bottom up to the intarsia pattern section, allowing for precise shaping and pattern placement
• Seamless Yoke: After the intarsia section, the body is joined in the round briefly before dividing for the front and back, then the yoke is worked seamlessly with short row shaping for back neck definition
• Stranded Colorwork: The sweater features an intarsia color pattern, which requires using separate balls of yarn for each distinct color block. The pattern instructions emphasize proper yarn management—never carrying unused colors across the wrong side and always picking up new colors from below the old color to intertwine the yarns and prevent holes at color changes
• Integrated Pocket: A front pocket is worked directly into the body as you knit, eliminating the need for separate pocket construction
• Sleeve Details: The sleeves are worked in the round from the bottom up and include thumbholes for each sleeve. The left sleeve features a stripe detail, adding visual interest to the design

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is Stockinette Stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for showcasing the intarsia color pattern. The pattern also incorporates ribbing at the cuffs and hem for a fitted, finished edge. Short row shaping is used in the yoke to create a contoured neckline and proper shoulder fit.

Materials

The suggested yarn is Valley Yarns Amherst, a 100% Merino Wool yarn with a yardage of 109 yards per 50-gram ball. Yarn quantities vary by size and color:

• Charcoal (Color A): 8–15 balls depending on size
• Burgundy (Color B): 2–3 balls depending on size
• Light Grey (Color C): 2 balls

Needles required include a Size 8 US (5 mm) circular needle measuring 24" or longer for the main body work, and Size 8 US (5 mm) needles in a preferred style for small circumference knitting to accommodate the sleeves and yoke sections worked in the round. Additional supplies include removable markers for tracking pattern sections and waste yarn or a stitch holder for temporarily securing stitches during construction.
