Twist Collective Sugarbeach Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

Sugarbeach is a fitted knit sweater designed by Fiona Ellis, available in six sizes ranging from 32" to 50 ½" bust measurement. This garment is intended to be worn with negative ease of -2 to 0" / -5 to 0 cm, creating a close, body-hugging silhouette. The sweater features a finished length of 22" to 25" (56 to 63.5 cm) depending on size, making it suitable for various body proportions and style preferences.

Techniques Used

The primary technique featured in this design is cable knitting, which creates dimensional, textured patterns throughout the garment. The sweater incorporates waist shaping through strategic decreases, with a decrease row worked on the right side that reduces 2 stitches per row by using ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit 2 together) decreases. The construction method uses charted patterns that are worked in established sequences, allowing knitters to follow visual guides for cable placement and pattern repeats across different size options.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Sugarbeach sweater employs a variety of fundamental knitting stitches combined into structured cable patterns. Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the foundation, creating the stockinette and reverse stockinette backgrounds that showcase the cable work. Cable stitches (k4, p4) are used to create the dimensional twisted rope effects characteristic of cable knit design. The pattern includes ribbing using k2, p2 and k2, p2 alternating sequences, which provides elasticity and structure, particularly in set-up rows. Decrease stitches including ssk and k2tog are strategically placed to shape the waist and create the intended fitted silhouette.

The design uses multiple charted patterns labeled as Chart A and Chart B, which are worked simultaneously across different sections of the back piece. Different size ranges begin at different rows within these charts, allowing the cable patterns to align properly across the full range of finished measurements. This sophisticated charting system ensures that the cable placement and pattern integrity remain consistent regardless of which size is being knitted.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Suggested Yarn: Valley Yarns Longmeadow, a blend of 60% cotton and 40% microfiber. This yarn is supplied in balls of 1 ¾ oz / 50 g, each containing 117 yards / 107 meters. The yardage requirements vary by size: 7 balls are needed for the smallest sizes (32" and 34 ½"), while the largest size (50 ½") requires 11 balls. The cotton-microfiber blend provides breathability and structure suitable for a fitted sweater design.

Needles: The pattern calls for Size 7 US / 4.5 mm straight knitting needles for the main fabric, as well as a Size 7 US / 4.5 mm circular needle measuring 16" / 40 cm long. Knitters are advised to adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge, ensuring that finished measurements match the pattern specifications.

Pattern Format

Sugarbeach is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern from Twist Collective, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased.
