Verden Pullover by Vanessa Ewing

What is Being Made

Verden is a classic raglan pullover sweater with a modern update. This knitted garment features a hi-lo hemline that adds contemporary style to the traditional raglan silhouette. The design combines rich cable and lace panels throughout the body, creating visual interest and texture. Deep ribbed sleeve cuffs provide a sporty, effortless aesthetic. The pullover is designed to be worn with 4–6 inches of ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Finished Measurements

Verden is available in four sizes with the following bust measurements:

  • Size 1: 38 ¼ inches / 97 cm
  • Size 2: 45 ¼ inches / 115 cm
  • Size 3: 52 inches / 132 cm
  • Size 4: 59 inches / 150 cm

Back length to shoulder ranges from 27 inches (68.5 cm) in the smallest size to 29 ½ inches (75 cm) in the largest size.

Knitting Techniques Used

Verden employs a combination of construction methods to create its finished structure. The sweater is worked from the bottom up, beginning with ribbed sections that are initially worked flat in rows. The ribbed sections are then joined to continue working in the round to the underarms, creating seamless fabric in this section. The Front and Back are subsequently worked separately in rows, while the Sleeves are worked in the round to the underarms. Raglan shaping is then worked flat in rows, and the neckband stitches are picked up and worked in the round. The finished garment is seamed to join the various sections together.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern incorporates cable stitches and lace stitches as primary design elements. The ribbing sections feature a combination of knit and purl stitches worked in a structured pattern. Stitch patterns are provided in both written text and charted formats for knitter preference. Charts are worked both in the round and back and forth. When working in the round, all chart rows are read from right to left. When working back and forth, right-side rows are read right to left, while wrong-side rows are read left to right. This dual-format approach allows knitters to follow their preferred method of pattern reading.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The suggested yarn for Verden is Lana Grossa Alta Moda Alpaca, a luxurious blend composed of 90% Alpaca, 5% Nylon, and 5% Wool. Each hank yields 153 yards (140 meters) and weighs 1 ¾ ounces (50 grams). The pattern requires 9 hanks for the smallest size, increasing to 11, 13, or 15 hanks for the larger sizes respectively. The sample shown was knitted in colorway #008 Petrol.

Two needle sizes are required for this project:

  • Size 9 US (5.5 mm) circular needle in 24–48 inch length, depending on bust size, plus needles in preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round
  • Size 7 US (4.5 mm) circular needle in 24–48 inch length

The smaller needle size is used for ribbed sections, while the larger size accommodates the main body fabric.
