What is Being Made

The Windjammer is a seamless, top-down knit sweater designed by Tori Gurbisz and published by Twist Collective. This pullover sweater is available in seven sizes ranging from 34" to 58" bust circumference, with finished lengths between 27½" and 30¼". The sweater is intended to be worn with 2–4" of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Techniques

This sweater employs a seamless, top-down construction method, which eliminates the need for seaming and allows the knitter to try on the garment as it progresses. The building process begins with the Back piece, which is worked flat in rows from the top down to the underarm. Stitches for each Front are then picked up from the Back cast-on edge and worked separately in rows to shape the neckline. Once the neck shaping is complete, the Front and Back pieces are joined together and the Body is worked in the round to the hem for a smooth, continuous fabric. Sleeve stitches are subsequently picked up around the armholes and worked in the round to completion.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Windjammer features two primary stitch patterns:

• Stockinette Stitch: The main fabric of the sweater is worked in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit texture. Stockinette is worked as knit stitches on right-side rows and purl stitches on wrong-side rows when working flat, and as continuous knit stitches when working in the round.
• Striped Pattern: The sweater incorporates horizontal stripes created by alternating colors. When working flat in rows, the stripe pattern repeats over 18 rows: 16 rows worked in the main color (MC) and 2 rows worked in the contrast color (CC). When working in the round, the stripe pattern repeats over 18 rounds using the same color sequence. The stripes create visual interest while maintaining the simplicity of stockinette stitch.
• Ribbing: A K1, P1 (knit one, purl one) ribbed cuff is worked for 5 rows at the neck edge to create a finished, elastic edge that frames the neckline.

The pattern includes detailed instructions for maintaining rib continuity during neck shaping, using strategic increases such as M1P (make one purl) and M1R (make one right) to preserve the established rib pattern rather than disrupting it with standard increases.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Windjammer pattern recommends Universal Yarn Bella Cash for construction. This yarn is a premium blend composed of 60% Fine Merino Superwash Wool, 30% Nylon, and 10% Cashmere. Each skein yields 230 yards (210 meters) and weighs 1¾ ounces (50 grams). The yardage requirements vary by size: sizes 34"–50" require 6 skeins of the main color #111 Cream, while sizes 54"–58" require 7 skeins. All sizes require 1–2 skeins of the contrast color #115 Peacoat, depending on the size.

The pattern calls for needles in two sizes:

• Size 5 US (3.75 mm) circular needles: Available in lengths of 24–48" (60–120 cm) depending on bust size, used for the main body and sleeves worked in the round
• Size 4 US (3.5 mm) needles: Available in the knitter's preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round, used for ribbed sections

The use of circular needles in various lengths accommodates the different circumferences required for different sizes and allows for seamless in-the-round construction.
