What is Being Made

The Tyria is a knitted cape designed by Amy Christoffers, offered in three sizes with finished neck edge measurements of 24", 25", or 26" and lower edge measurements of 51¼", 54¾", or 58¼" respectively. The cape measures 19" in length across all sizes. This intermediate-level knitting project is worked from the top down in one complete piece, creating a versatile layering garment suitable for various occasions.

Techniques Used

The Tyria cape employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The garment is constructed using circular knitting, worked in the round from the neckline downward to create a seamless construction. Yarn overs are incorporated throughout the design to create decorative lace elements and shaping. Decreases including SSK (slip, slip, knit), k2tog (knit two together), k3tog (knit three together), and SSSK (slip, slip, slip, knit) are strategically placed to control the cape's expansion and create the lace pattern structure. The pattern also utilizes stitch markers to track pattern repeats and the beginning of each round, essential for maintaining accuracy when working in the round.

Materials and Gauge

The Tyria cape is designed to be knitted with Berroco Vibe yarn, a yarn by Berroco, Inc. The project requires 4 balls (50 grams each) for sizes 24" and 25" neck edge, and 5 balls for the largest 26" size, totaling approximately 200 grams for smaller sizes and 250 grams for the largest size.

Circular needles are essential for this in-the-round construction. The pattern calls for one 24" circular needle in size 10½ (6.50 mm) for the main body, and two 16" circular needles in sizes 10 (6.00 mm) and 10½ (6.50 mm) for the cast-on and initial rounds. Eight stitch markers are required, with one in a contrasting color to mark the beginning of each round.

The recommended gauge is 14 stitches and 22 rounds equals 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger size 10½ (6.50 mm) needle. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished cape meets the specified measurements.
