Product Description
Universal Yarn Harbor Striped Knit Sweater
Garment Overview
Harbor is a uniquely striped knit sweater designed by Amy Gunderson and featured in the Universal Yarn Lakeside Retreat eBook from Spring 2019. This multi-directional top is worked on the bias, creating a beautifully textured and lightweight garment that is dense enough to provide wind resistance. The sweater is available in eight sizes ranging from Extra Small to 4X, with finished bust measurements from 33 inches to 61¼ inches and a length of approximately 23¼ to 24¼ inches depending on size.
Construction Technique
Harbor is knit bottom-up using a distinctive bias construction method. The body is worked flat on circular needles, beginning with a triangular shape that is then followed by an even section where increases are strategically placed only in the center while decreases are made on the edges. This innovative shaping technique creates the characteristic multi-directional appearance and textured fabric that defines this design. The bias construction allows the striping to flow diagonally across the garment, adding visual interest and movement to the finished piece.
Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout the body is Half Linen Stitch
The neckline is finished with K1, P1 Ribbing, a classic one-by-one ribbed edging that provides stretch and a polished finish. This ribbing is worked over an odd number of stitches and alternates knit and purl stitches to create the characteristic elastic texture.
Stripe Pattern
Harbor features a complex and carefully planned stripe sequence that runs throughout the entire back piece. The stripe pattern alternates between the main color (MC) and a contrasting color (CC) in varying widths: 54 to 76 rows of main color, followed by 2 rows of contrasting color, 2 rows of main color, 4 rows of contrasting color, 6 rows of main color, 4 rows of contrasting color, 50 to 58 rows of main color, 4 rows of contrasting color, 2 rows of main color, 8 rows of contrasting color, 6 rows of main color, and 22 rows of contrasting color. This intricate sequence creates visual depth and movement as the stripes interact with the bias construction.
Materials and Gauge
Harbor is designed to be knit with Universal Yarn Lina, a linen and cotton blend yarn composed of 68% linen and 32% cotton. This fiber content provides breathability, structure, and a beautiful drape ideal for a lightweight sweater. The yardage is 252 yards per 100-gram skein. The project requires 3 to 5 skeins of the main color (101 Amaranth) and 2 to 4 skeins of the contrasting color (111 Oyster), depending on the size being knit.
The sweater is worked on US Size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches in length for the main body, with a gauge of 20 stitches and 40 rows equaling 4 inches in the Half Linen Stitch pattern. US Size 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles in both 32-inch and 16-inch lengths are used for the ribbed neckline edging and any other ribbed sections. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure proper fit and finished measurements.
Additional Notions
The project requires a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming, as well as stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the construction process.
