Product Description

Valley Yarns presents 010 Lewiston from the Kathy Elkins Fall in New England Collection, a gorgeous women’s pullover knit in Wachusett. The sweater features a wide cabled motif that is worked sideways on the upper body with a scoop neckline and A-line shaping. Lewiston’s cable panels are knit first, and then stitches are picked along the long side of each cable panel, joined in the round, and worked down for the lower body. Stitches are picked up along the second long side of the cable panels for the upper body. Valley Yarns Wachusett is a gorgeous blend of Merino wool and cashmere, named after scenic Mount Wachusett—the highest point in Massachusetts east of the Connecticut River. The cable panel pattern is charted and written out.

Valley Yarns Lewiston Pullover: Intermediate Knit Sweater with Sideways Cable Design

What Is Being Made

The Lewiston is a pullover sweater from the Fall in New England Collection, designed by Julie Turjoman for Valley Yarns. This intermediate-level knitting project features a minimalist cable motif worked sideways across the upper body, creating a sophisticated silhouette with a wide scoop neckline and A-line shaping. The pullover is available in sizes XS through 4XL, with finished bust measurements ranging from 38 inches to 66 inches and designed to fit with 6 to 8 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Key Design Features

  • Cable Panel Construction: Two identical cable panels measuring approximately 5½ inches wide are worked first, then rotated sideways to form the front and back upper bodice pieces
  • Neckline: Wide scoop neck finished with a narrow band of reverse stockinette stitch worked in the round
  • Silhouette: A-line shaping with curved back hem that is longer in back and shorter in front, created through strategic short-row shaping
  • Sleeve Style: Drop shoulders with knitted-on sleeves worked downward from the shoulder line to ribbed cuffs
  • Construction Method: Seamless construction worked primarily in the round for a polished, professional finish

Knitting Techniques Used

This sweater employs several intermediate knitting techniques that build on fundamental skills. The cable stitch is the signature design element, creating textured interest on the upper body while maintaining excellent stitch definition. Seamless, in-the-round construction is used throughout most of the project, which reduces finishing work and creates a more refined garment. Short-row shaping is employed strategically to create the curved back hem and contoured fit, allowing the garment to drape elegantly across the body. The Three-Needle Bind-Off method joins the shoulders, providing a sturdy, flexible seam. Picking up stitches is used multiple times during construction—along the long sides of the cable panels to begin the body sections, around the neckline for the finishing band, and along the shoulder line for the sleeves. The neckband is intentionally worked before the sleeves to minimize bulk at the neck opening.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used for the body, creating a smooth, classic fabric with excellent drape
  • Cable Stitch: A 37-stitch cable panel that serves as the focal point of the upper bodice design
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Used for the neckband, creating subtle textural contrast
  • Ribbing: Applied at the cuffs and hem for structure and recovery

Yarn and Needles

The Lewiston is worked in Valley Yarns Wachusett, a luxurious blend of 70% Merino Wool and 30% Cashmere. This fiber combination provides warmth and softness ideal for cool weather wear, while the cashmere content adds a refined drape and luxurious hand feel. The yarn is available in the colorway 100002 - Cream. Yardage requirements range from 9 balls (approximately 1,467 yards) for the smallest size to 19 balls (approximately 3,097 yards) for the largest size, with each ball weighing 50 grams and containing 163 yards.

The pattern calls for US size 7 (4.50 mm) circular needles measuring 24 to 40 inches for the main fabric, which is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked. US size 5 (3.50 mm) circular needles and double-pointed needles are used for the ribbed cuffs and hem, creating a tighter gauge for structure. Additional materials include a locking stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements

Rated as an intermediate project, the Lewiston requires solid foundational knitting skills and comfort with several intermediate techniques. Knitters should be proficient with cable stitches, working in the round on circular needles, picking up stitches, short-
