Valley Yarns Marianas Top Down Pullover
What Is Being Made
The Marianas Top Down Pullover is a nautical-inspired knit sweater designed by Kirsten Hipsky. Named after the Mariana Trench, the deepest place on Earth, this garment combines functional design with ocean-themed inspiration. The pullover is available in four finished chest measurements: 36, 40, 44, and 48 inches, making it suitable for a range of sizes.
Construction Techniques
This sweater is constructed using a top-down seamless method, which allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length as needed. The design begins with a cast-on at the neckline and is worked downward in a combination of techniques:
- Worked in the round for the body sections using circular needles
- Worked flat for certain shaping sections
- Seamless construction eliminates the need for seaming, creating a smooth, professional finish
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Marianas Top Down Pullover incorporates several fundamental knitting stitches and patterns:
- Stockinette stitch (St st) forms the primary fabric of the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance
- Ribbing (k2, p2) is used for the cuffs, waistband, and neckline edging, providing elasticity and a finished look that hugs the body
- Increases and decreases are strategically placed to shape the armholes, sleeve caps, and waist shaping, with specific placement marked by stitch markers
- The neckline is finished with crochet hook edging for a refined neckline treatment
Materials and Tools
This pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended drape and gauge:
- Yarn: Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky in #30 Caribbean Blue. This bulky-weight yarn comes in 108-yard skeins, with yardage requirements of 6, 8, 9, or 10 skeins depending on size
- Needles: US size 10½ circular needles (32 inches) for working the body in the round
- Needles: US size 10½ double-pointed needles for sleeve cap shaping
- Additional tools: Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a size 7 crochet hook for neckline finishing
- Gauge: 12 stitches and 16 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, worked on US 10½ needles
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle seamless construction and shaping techniques. The top-down method and use of circular needles require comfort with in-the-round knitting, while the decreases and increases demand attention to pattern instructions and stitch marker placement.
Design Details
The sweater features a fitted silhouette with strategic shaping. The body begins with a ribbed neckline and includes waist shaping through increases and decreases. Sleeves are picked up from the armhole and worked downward in the round, with decreases at the beginning and end of rounds to create a tapered sleeve cap. The sleeves measure 18.5 inches from the armhole and finish with k2, p2 ribbing. The body extends 10 inches from the armhole before finishing with ribbed edging, creating a pullover-style garment with a classic, wearable fit.
