Valley Yarns Alicia Knit Hat
What Is Being Made
The Valley Yarns Alicia is a luxurious knit hat designed by Lidia Karabinech. This intermediate-level project creates a finished hat with a circumference of 19 inches and a height of 12 inches, suitable for one size. The hat is crafted entirely from Valley Yarns Monadnock, a premium 100% cashmere yarn that provides exceptional softness and warmth, making it both a stylish accessory and a cozy, practical garment.
Techniques Used
The Alicia hat is constructed using several key knitting techniques that define its construction and visual appeal:
- Seamless, Worked in the Round: This hat is knitted seamlessly using circular needles and double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, professional finish. Working in the round produces a continuous spiral of fabric without visible seams.
- Bottom-Up Construction: The hat is worked from the bottom ribbed edge upward toward the crown, allowing the knitter to try on the hat during construction and easily adjust the fit before completing the crown shaping.
- Cable Techniques: The hat features cable stitches as a central design element. Specifically, the pattern includes C8F (cable 8 front) and C8B (cable 8 back) maneuvers, where 4 stitches are slipped onto a cable needle and held while knitting the next 4 stitches, then working the held stitches. These cables create the distinctive textured pattern that runs vertically around the hat.
- Decreasing for Crown Shaping: The pattern employs a centered double decrease (s2kp2) and standard knit 2 together (k2tog) decreases to shape the crown, gradually reducing stitches to close the top of the hat smoothly.
- Yarn Over Increases: Yarn overs (yo) are used strategically within the pattern to create openwork details and maintain stitch count during the cable pattern repeats.
Stitches Used
The Alicia hat employs a variety of fundamental and decorative stitches to create its finished appearance:
- Knit (K) and Purl (P) Stitches: The foundation stitches that form the fabric. The pattern alternates between knit and purl stitches to create texture and define the cable pattern sections.
- K1/P1 Ribbing: Used as the pattern stitch, likely for the cuff or edge of the hat to create elasticity and a fitted finish that hugs the head comfortably.
- Cable Stitches (C8F and C8B): Eight-stitch cables that cross over one another, with C8F (cable 8 front) creating cables that twist to the front and C8B (cable 8 back) creating cables that twist to the back. These cables are worked every 10 rounds to maintain the textured pattern throughout the hat.
- Yarn Over (yo): Creates new stitches and adds decorative openwork elements within the cable pattern sections.
- Centered Double Decrease (s2kp2): A specialized decrease that slips 2 stitches together as if to knit 2 together, knits 1 stitch, then passes the 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch, creating a centered, visually appealing decrease for crown shaping.
- Knit 2 Together (k2tog): A standard right-leaning decrease used in conjunction with other decreases for crown shaping.
Materials and Tools
The Alicia hat requires specific materials and tools to complete the project successfully:
- Yarn: Valley Yarns Monadnock, 100% cashmere, in color 1784. The pattern requires 2 balls, with each ball containing 50 grams and 122 yards of yarn, providing approximately 244 yards total.
- Needles: US 8 (5mm) 16-inch circular needle for the main fabric, US 7 (4.5mm) 16-inch circular needle for the ribbed cuff or edge, and US 8 (5mm) double-pointed needles for crown shaping when stitches become too few for circular needles.
- Additional Tools: A cable needle for holding stitches during cable crossings, a stitch marker to denote the beginning of each round,
