Valley Yarns Matanuska Knit Waistcoat

What Is Being Made

The Matanuska is a streamlined knit waistcoat or duster designed by Julie Turjoman, offered in two distinct length options to suit different styling preferences. This versatile layering piece features clean lines and simple shaping, making it an excellent introduction to sweater construction for newer knitters. The figure-skimming fit provides a casual and comfortable silhouette that works beautifully as a standalone vest or layered over other garments. Available in sizes XS through 4XL, the vest length measures approximately 26 to 29½ inches, while the optional duster length extends from 30 to 33½ inches, allowing knitters to customize their finished garment.

Techniques Used

This knit waistcoat is worked flat on circular needles, a technique that provides stability and ease of handling while constructing the garment pieces. The pattern employs slip-stitched hems to create polished, professional-looking edges that frame the neckline and armholes. The construction reinforces fundamental sweater knitting skills through straightforward shaping and assembly, making it ideal for knitters transitioning from smaller projects to garment-level work. The design emphasizes clean construction methods that build confidence in basic techniques.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout the Matanuska is Stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric that showcases the yarn's beautiful drape. The pattern also incorporates an Eyelet Rib stitch as a design element, worked over a multiple of 5 stitches plus 3, with a 4-row repeat. This stitch guide includes variations in stitch count across the repeat, with increases in Row 3 and decreases in Row 5, adding subtle texture and visual interest to the finished piece. These straightforward stitch patterns keep the project accessible for adventurous beginners while delivering sophisticated results.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Matanuska is designed to showcase Valley Yarns Hampden, a luxurious blend composed of 50% Baby Alpaca, 35% Fine Merino Wool, and 15% Mulberry Silk. This fiber combination delivers exceptional softness and a silky drape that creates the figure-skimming fit characteristic of this design. The sample shown in Size S uses 9 to 20 skeins depending on size, with each skein containing 50 grams and 95 yards. For the duster length option, knitters should plan for 11 to 22 skeins. The pattern specifies color #07 in Burgundy for the sample garment.

Needles and Gauge

Construction requires US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 24- to 32-inch lengths for the main fabric, with US size 4 (3.50 mm) circular needles of the same lengths used for ribbed edgings. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch on the larger needles after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements and fit across the bust (34 to 62 inches) and hips (37¼ to 65¼ inches).

Additional Materials

Beyond yarn and needles, the Matanuska requires standard knitting notions including stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, locking stitch markers for securing stitches during construction, stitch holders or waste yarn for managing live stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming. These materials support the flat-worked construction method and ensure clean finishing throughout the project.

Skill Level and Project Suitability

Rated as an Adventurous Beginner project, the Matanuska reinforces essential sweater knitting fundamentals while remaining approachable for knitters ready to expand beyond basic garments. The pattern's straightforward shaping, simple stitch patterns, and logical construction make it an ideal "first sweater" project. The two length options provide flexibility, allowing knitters to choose between a traditional vest or an extended duster silhouette based on personal preference and intended use.
