Valley Yarns Monarch Tank Top
What is Being Made
The Monarch is a versatile knitted tank top designed by Julie Turjoman that transitions seamlessly from professional to casual wear. This intermediate-level garment features a body-skimming fit that falls to hip length, making it suitable for layering under jackets at work, wearing for date night, or pairing with jeans for weekend casual styling. The tank showcases a distinctive squared-off neckline and provides coverage with shoulders wide enough for bra strap support.
Construction Techniques
The Monarch employs a hybrid construction approach that combines the efficiency of circular knitting with strategic flat sections. The garment is worked in the round from the cast-on edge up to the beginning of the cut-in armholes, then transitions to worked flat (back and forth) from that point through the shoulders. This technique minimizes seaming while maintaining the clean lines of a seamless garment. The shoulders are finished with a Three-Needle Bind-Off, keeping construction details minimal and professional.
The bottom-up construction method begins at the hem and progresses upward, allowing for easy fit adjustments during the knitting process. A seamless approach is maintained throughout most of the garment, with only the shoulder seams requiring finishing.
Stitch Work and Lace Details
The pattern incorporates several specialized stitch techniques to create visual interest and texture. The hem features a Slip Stitch Rib pattern that is carried up the sides and armholes, extending all the way to the shoulders. This ribbed detailing provides structure and definition to the garment's edges.
The centerpiece of the design is a graceful leaf lace motif positioned on the center front. This lace panel flows downward and terminates at the squared-off neckline, creating an elegant focal point. The lace work adds visual sophistication while maintaining breathability in the cotton-blend fabric. The pattern also incorporates an unusual hem stitch that contributes distinctive texture and character to the base of the garment.
The stockinette stitch serves as the primary fabric base, worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches when blocked on the larger needles. This gauge specification ensures proper drape and fit across all size ranges.
Yarn and Materials
The Monarch is designed to showcase Valley Yarns Granville, a premium blend of 90% Pima Cotton and 10% Merino Wool. This fiber composition provides the crisp stitch definition necessary to accentuate the pattern's special details, including the leaf lace motif and hem stitching. The yarn is available in 50-gram hanks with 167 yards per hank. The pattern shown features Color 12-Coral.
Yarn requirements vary by size: XS through M sizes require 4 to 5 hanks, L and XL sizes require 5 to 6 hanks, and larger sizes (2XL through 5XL) require 6 to 8 hanks depending on the specific dimensions.
Needles and Notions
The pattern calls for circular needles in two sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction:
- US 5 (3.75mm) circular needles in 16-inch and 32-40 inch lengths for the main fabric
- US 4 (3.50mm) circular needles in 16-inch and 32-40 inch lengths for the ribbed hem
Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction points, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing.
Sizing and Fit
The Monarch is available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5XL, with finished bust measurements from 32¾ inches (XS) to 63¾ inches (5XL). The garment is designed to be worn with 1 to 2 inches of positive ease, creating a body-skimming silhouette that flatters various body types while maintaining comfort and mobility.
Difficulty Level
Rated as Intermediate, this pattern requires familiarity with fundamental knitting techniques including working in the round, reading lace charts, managing stitch markers, and executing the Three-Needle Bind-Off. The combination of circular and flat knitting, along with the lace panel integration, makes this an appropriate project for knitters who have completed several basic garments and are ready to
