The Valley Yarns Channel is a top-down pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman, perfect for warmer weather layering. This intermediate-level knitting project features a scoop neckline, fitted waist shaping, and ¾-length sleeves. The design offers a sophisticated yet understated approach to colorwork, with a simple pop of contrast color at the neckline and hems rather than an elaborate yoke pattern. Available in sizes XS through 5XL, the finished bust measurements range from 33¾ inches to 61½ inches, with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease built in for comfortable wear.
This sweater employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its refined construction and fit. The garment is worked from the top down, allowing for easy fitting adjustments as you progress. The piece is primarily worked in the round using circular needles, creating seamless fabric for the yoke and body. Stranded colorwork is incorporated at the neckline and hems, introducing the contrast color in a single-color pattern that adds visual interest without overwhelming complexity. Short-row shaping is strategically worked into the back yoke to raise the back neck and improve overall fit. The lower body and sleeve wrists feature a matching band of the same colorwork motif. Hem finishing is accomplished with single hems at the sleeve wrists and lower body edge, providing a polished, professional appearance.
The foundation of this design is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric body of the sweater. The stranded colorwork sections introduce two-color knitting technique, where both the main color and contrast color are carried and worked simultaneously to create the decorative pattern bands. This colorwork is worked with a single contrast color, keeping the technique manageable for intermediate knitters while still delivering visual impact.
Valley Yarns Channel is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Hampden, a luxurious blend of 50% baby alpaca, 35% fine merino wool, and 15% mulberry silk. This fiber composition provides warmth, breathability, and a beautiful drape ideal for a lightweight pullover. The main color is #02 Sand, and the contrast color is #09 Concord Grape. Yarn requirements vary by size: the main color requires 9 to 18 hanks (depending on size), while the contrast color requires 2 to 3 hanks, with each hank weighing 50 grams and providing 95 yards.
This project requires multiple needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction. US size 6 (4.00 mm) circular needles in 16-inch and 24-32 inch lengths, along with double-pointed needles, are used as the primary working size. US size 7 (4.50 mm) needles in the same lengths are available if necessary to achieve proper gauge while working stranded colorwork, as the two-color technique can create tighter fabric. US size 5 (3.75 mm) needles are used for the ribbed hem sections. The target gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the middle-size needle, measured after blocking.
Beyond yarn and needles, you will need stitch markers to indicate pattern repeats and shaping points, locking stitch markers for holding stitches, stitch holders or waste yarn for securing live stitches during construction, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming if needed.
