Valley Yarns Warwick is a lovely baby’s hat and bootie set that makes a stunning baby gift for any occasion as it is a fast knit using Whately. The hat is worked from the brim to the crown seamlessly in the round from the bottom up with baby cable ribbing. I-cord is fed in and out of eyelets that are positioned around the ribbed brim. The bookies are knit back and forth in rows from the cuff down to the sole and seamed along the back of the angle and bottom of the sole. Whately by Valley Yarns is a soft and luxurious worsted weight yarn. This yarn is ideal for summer tanks and shawls. With a two-color chainette construction, it'll add interest and strength to any project you make with Whately! The baby cable rib pattern is in written form only.

Valley Yarns Warwick: Baby Hat and Booties Set

What is Being Made

The Warwick pattern is a coordinated baby gift set consisting of a fitted hat and matching booties designed for newborns through 24 months. This two-piece collection is specifically engineered as a quick-knit project, completing in just one or two balls of yarn, making it ideal for gift-givers and those seeking fast, satisfying knitting projects. The set is shown in sizes for 6–12 month old babies and features thoughtful design elements including an adjustable drawstring and a dense, durable sole construction.

Techniques Used

The Warwick pattern employs multiple construction techniques to create both pieces:

  • Hat Construction: Worked in the round from the brim to the crown in one continuous piece using either double-pointed needles or the Magic Loop method on a circular needle. The hat features top-down shaping with strategic decreases that taper the crown.
  • Bootie Construction: Worked flat in rows from the cuff down to the sole, then seamed along the back ankle and bottom sole for a finished, structured fit.
  • Adjustable Fit Feature: An I-Cord is threaded through eyelets (created with yarnovers) positioned above the ribbed brim, allowing the hat to be tightened or loosened for a customized fit as the baby grows.

Stitches Used

The pattern combines fundamental and decorative stitches for both visual interest and practical function:

  • Baby Cable Ribbing: Used on the hat brim to create a textured, stretchy edge that sits comfortably against delicate skin.
  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch for both the hat body and booties, creating a smooth, classic fabric that showcases the yarn's loft and drape.
  • Yarnovers: Strategically placed to form eyelets above the ribbed brim, through which the I-Cord drawstring is threaded.
  • Decrease Shaping: Used to taper the hat crown from the brim circumference down to the top opening.
  • I-Cord: A functional and decorative cord element that serves as an adjustable drawstring.

Materials and Yarn

The Warwick pattern is designed to showcase Valley Yarns Whately, a premium blend yarn that provides the perfect balance of warmth and breathability for a baby gift:

  • Yarn: Valley Yarns Whately (60% Superfine Alpaca / 40% Cotton); 50g per 164 yards. The pattern requires 1–2 balls depending on the size selected, with the sample shown in Fawn colorway.
  • Yarn Properties: The alpaca-cotton blend delivers lofty, lightweight comfort ideal for babies, with just enough warmth without overheating. The superfine alpaca ensures softness against sensitive skin, while the cotton content adds breathability and durability.
  • Hat Needles: US size 8 (5.00 mm) double-pointed needles or 40-inch circular needle for Magic Loop method; US size 6 (4.00 mm) double-pointed needles for ribbing.
  • Bootie Needles: US size 6 (4.00 mm) needles for a denser, more durable sole fabric.
  • Additional Materials: Stitch markers and a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.
