Valley Yarns Cygnus Seamless Top-Down Pullover

What Is Being Made

The Cygnus is a streamlined pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman, featuring a top-down yoke construction with a scoop neckline and short sleeves. This figure-skimming pullover is worked seamlessly in the round and falls to mid-hip, making it an excellent layering piece with casual, comfortable styling. The design is available in sizes XS through 4XL, with the sample garment shown in Size S.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques that reinforce fundamental sweater construction skills:

  • Top-down yoke construction: The sweater begins at the neckline and is worked downward, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the garment as you progress.
  • Seamless, in-the-round knitting: The entire pullover is worked circularly using circular needles and double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric.
  • Short-row shaping: The back neck is raised using short-row shaping to improve fit and ensure proper neckline placement.
  • Yoke increases: Strategic increases are worked into plain stockinette rounds to shape the yoke without disrupting the textured ribbed pattern.
  • Positive ease fitting: The sweater is designed to fit with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed silhouette; sizing down one size is recommended for a closer fit.

Stitches Used

The Cygnus pattern incorporates straightforward stitch techniques suitable for intermediate knitters:

  • Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric.
  • Seeded rib pattern: A simple textured pattern worked at the yoke for added visual interest and dimension without excessive complexity.
  • Ribbing: Used for the neck ribbing, hem, and sleeve cuffs to provide elasticity and a finished appearance.

Materials and Specifications

The Cygnus pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended drape and softness:

  • Yarn: Valley Yarns Hampden, a luxury blend composed of 50% Baby Alpaca, 35% Fine Merino Wool, and 15% Mulberry Silk. Each hank contains 50 grams and 95 yards. Yarn requirements range from 7 hanks for size XS to 14 hanks for size 4XL. The sample is worked in Color #08 - Dusty Rose.
  • Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in 16" and 24"-40" lengths for the main fabric, and US size 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles in 16" and 24"-40" lengths plus double-pointed needles for the hem, sleeves, and cuffs.
  • Additional materials: Stitch markers (including one uniquely colored marker to denote the beginning of round), stitch holders or waste yarn for holding stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Finished Measurements

Achieving proper gauge is essential for accurate sizing. The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needle, after blocking. Finished bust measurements range from 33½ inches for size XS to 62 inches for size 4XL, accommodating a wide range of body sizes and fit preferences.

Skill Level and Pattern Notes

Rated as an Adventurous Beginner level pattern, the Cygnus is ideal for knitters who have mastered basic skills and are ready to perfect their technique in circular knitting. The clean lines and simple shaping reinforce fundamental sweater knitting principles while introducing intermediate techniques such as top-down construction and short-row shaping. The silky drape and delicious softness of Valley Yarns Hampden yarn enhance the garment's wearability and make it a rewarding project for skill development.
