Product Description
Valley Yarns Auriga is an elegant women’s pullover knit in Huntington Splash. This top has a simple shape with a boat neck and airy lace shoulder panels, perfect for the warm weather. Wear this under a jacket for the office or as is on a dinner date. Auriga is knit in the round from the bottom up to the underarms and then worked back and forth to the shoulders. Stitches are cast on at each edge for the short sleeves. The lace panels are worked separately and then seamed to the long side edges of the sleeves. Valley Yarns’ Huntington Splash is a simple sock weight yarn with a bit of pizzazz and is perfect for this pullover. The lace pattern is charted and written out.

Valley Yarns Auriga Knit Sweater Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Auriga is a sophisticated lightweight boat neck tee designed by Julie Turjoman for Valley Yarns. This versatile warm-weather top features airy lace shoulder panels combined with simple, elegant shaping. The garment is designed to be worn with 0 to 2 inches of positive ease and comes in nine sizes ranging from XS to 4XL, with finished bust measurements from 32 inches to 60 inches. The sample shown is in Size S.
Construction Method and Techniques
The Auriga employs a sophisticated mixed construction approach that combines multiple knitting techniques. The garment is worked in the round from the cast-on through the underarms, then worked flat in rows from the underarms to the shoulders. This hybrid approach allows for seamless construction in the body while providing flexibility for the shoulder shaping. Short sleeves are created using the Backward Loop cast-on method at the side edges, and the distinctive lace panels that form the shoulder tops and neckline are worked separately and then seamed into place. The construction is bottom-up, beginning at the hem and progressing toward the shoulders and neckline.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Auriga incorporates several key stitch patterns to create its sophisticated appearance. The main body is worked in Ridged Stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic fabric base. To add subtle texture and visual interest, single purl rows are worked at regular intervals throughout the body. All body and sleeve hems are finished with K1/P1 Rib stitch, which provides elasticity and a polished edge. The standout design feature is the lace panels that form the shoulder tops and upper sleeves, measuring 2¾ inches wide when blocked. These lace panels create the airy, sophisticated aesthetic that defines the garment's character.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Auriga is designed to be knitted with Valley Yarns Huntington Splash, a soft fiber blend consisting of 75% Merino Wool and 25% Nylon. This blend provides warmth, breathability, and durability suitable for a lightweight warm-weather garment. Yarn requirements range from 2 hanks for the smallest sizes (XS, S, M, L, and XL) to 5 hanks for the largest size (4XL). Each hank contains 436 yards per 100 grams. The sample shown is worked in the Indian Ocean colorway, which features splashes of bold color interspersed with subtle solids.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires two sizes of circular needles. US 6 (4.00mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 24-32-inch lengths are used for the main fabric, worked at a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rounds over 4 inches in Ridged Stockinette stitch when blocked. US 4 (3.50mm) circular needles in the same lengths are used for the ribbed hems, with a gauge of 30 stitches and 36 rounds over 4 inches in K1/P1 Rib stitch. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points.
Skill Level and Difficulty
The Auriga is rated as an Advanced Beginner project. While the foundational techniques—stockinette stitch, ribbing, and basic shaping—are accessible to knitters with fundamental skills, the pattern incorporates more sophisticated elements such as lace work, working in the round, transitioning to working flat, and seaming components together. The mixed construction method and the need to work lace panels separately and integrate them into the garment require intermediate-level attention to detail and pattern reading ability.
