Product Description

Valley Yarns Mount Rainier is a stunning striped unisex pullover knit in Northampton. The sweater features a crew neckline and long set-in sleeves that are great as a first sweater project and engaging enough for even the more experienced knitters. Mount Rainier is knit in the round from the bottom up to the armholes in a charted stripe sequence, then divided for the front and the back. Neckband stitches are picked up along the neck edge and worked in the round. The sleeve stitches are picked up along the armhole edge and worked in the round to the cuffs. Valley Yarns Northampton is a workhorse yarn that you’ll come back to time and time again. We sourced a soft Peruvian wool and dyed it in a beautiful collection of solid colors and heathered shades. The stripe sequence is in chart form only.

Valley Yarns Mount Rainier Unisex Striped Pullover Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Mount Rainier is a unisex pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman, featuring a classic crewneck construction. This garment is an excellent first sweater project, suitable for adventurous beginners through experienced knitters. Available in sizes ranging from XS to 5XL, with finished chest circumferences from 34½" to 64¾", the sweater is designed to fit with 2–4" positive ease, making it ideal for layering over other garments.

Construction Techniques

The Mount Rainier employs several sophisticated construction methods that balance beginner accessibility with advanced design elements. The sweater is worked seamlessly in the round from the hem up to the base of the armholes, creating a continuous tube that eliminates side seams. This bottom-up approach allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length as needed.

The body transitions to flat knitting in rows from the armholes to the shoulders, accommodating the set-in sleeve shaping. Short-row shaping is used at the shoulders to enhance fit and provide a more tailored silhouette. The sleeves are worked seamlessly from the armholes downward to the cuffs with decrease shaping, maintaining the stripe pattern throughout. After the front and back pieces are seamed together at the shoulders, stitches are picked up for the crew neckband, which is finished with ribbing.

Stitch Techniques

The sweater is primarily worked in stockinette stitch, the foundational knit fabric that creates a smooth, classic appearance. Ribbing is used for the cuffs and neckband, providing elasticity and a refined finish. The design features a charted stripe sequence that creates subtle gradient color shifts throughout the garment, reinforcing the striped pattern with carefully selected color combinations.

Materials and Yarn

The Mount Rainier is designed to showcase Valley Yarns Northampton, a 100% wool yarn available in an extensive color palette. The sample shown uses three main colors plus a highlight color:

  • Main Color (MC): Valley Yarns Northampton in Color 40 Ocean Heather—2 to 3 skeins depending on size
  • Contrast Color 1 (CC1): Valley Yarns Northampton in Color 50 Medium Gray—2 to 3 skeins depending on size
  • Contrast Color 2 (CC2): Valley Yarns Northampton in Color 55 Stonewashed Heather—2 to 3 skeins depending on size
  • Contrast Color 3 (CC3): Valley Yarns Northampton in Color 01 White—1 skein

Each skein of Valley Yarns Northampton contains 100 grams and yields 247 yards, allowing for substantial yardage in a worsted-weight yarn suitable for sweater construction.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern calls for US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles in 16" and 32" lengths, plus double-pointed needles for the main fabric. US size 6 (4.0 mm) circular needles in 16–24" and 40" lengths, plus double-pointed needles, are used for all ribbing. Circular needles are specified to accommodate the large number of stitches required for the garment's width.

The gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rounds per 4 inches worked on the larger needle in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly given the positive ease design.

Additional Materials

Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points, and a tapestry needle for seaming shoulders and weaving in yarn ends.

Design Features and Color Work

The Mount Rainier's sophisticated appeal lies in its use of subtle gradient color shifts created through the stripe sequence. Northampton's extensive color palette enables knitters to select colors that create harmonious transitions, keeping the design visually interesting without requiring complex colorwork techniques. This approach makes the sweater accessible to beginners while offering experienced knitters the opportunity to explore
