The Mojave is a knitted slipover vest designed by Julie Turjoman, created as a versatile layering piece with a deep V-neckline. This intermediate-level project produces a structured topper that hits at mid-hip and is available in sizes ranging from XS to 4XL, with finished bust measurements from 36½" to 63¾". The design incorporates 6-8" of positive ease, making it ideal for wearing over other garments.
The Mojave slipover employs seamed construction worked flat in separate pieces, which adds structure to the soft yarn. The garment is worked back and forth in rows rather than in the round, with the front and back pieces created separately and then seamed together from the split hems to the underarms. Short-row shaping is used at the drop shoulders to enhance fit and drape. The deep V-neckline features ribbed edgings that flow from the center twist stitch panel, creating a modern aesthetic.
The pattern features several key stitch patterns that create visual interest and texture. Twist stitch forms the primary decorative element, appearing in centered panels on both the front and back pieces. These twist stitch panels flow directly into the ribbing that frames the deep V-neckline. Stockinette stitch fills the sections between the twist stitch panels, providing a smooth contrast. Ribbing is used throughout for all hem edges, worked in a k1/p1 (knit one, purl one) pattern. The back hem is worked 1½" longer than the front hem, creating the split ribbed hem detail mentioned in the design.
The Mojave is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Hardwick, a yarn composed of 50% Baby Alpaca, 35% Wool, and 15% Silk. Each hank provides 164 yards and weighs 100 grams. Yardage requirements range from 5 hanks for the smallest size (XS) to 11 hanks for the largest size (4XL), with the sample shown in Size S requiring 6 hanks in the Smoke colorway.
Needles required include US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles in 16" and 32-40" lengths, plus double-pointed needles for ribbed edgings. US size 9 (5.5 mm) needles in the same lengths are used for the main body of the garment. Gauge is critical: 18 stitches and 24 rows equal 4" when measured over the twist stitch pattern on the larger needles after blocking, while 17 stitches and 24 rows equal 4" over stockinette stitch on the larger needles after blocking.
Additional materials needed include stitch markers (with locking stitch markers recommended for tracking pattern repeats), a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, and the Long-Tail cast-on method is used to begin the back piece.
The Mojave showcases the unique qualities of Hardwick yarn: its thick-and-thin texture, lofty lightness, and generous yardage make it an economical choice for this statement piece. The minimalist twist stitch cable pattern appeals to more experienced knitters seeking visual interest without overwhelming complexity. The deep V-neckline is perfect for layering over t-shirts or long-sleeve tops, while the modern split ribbed hems add contemporary styling. The structured seaming combined with short-row shaping at the shoulders ensures the vest drapes elegantly despite the yarn's soft hand.
