Product Description

Valley Yarns Galanthus is a delightful men’s pullover knit in Becket. The sweater features a relaxed Henley neckline, dropped shoulders, and a lovely textured pattern. Galanthus is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. The sleeve stitches are picked up along the armhole edge and worked in the round to the cuff. Becket is a customer favorite, and its scrumptious blend of super fine alpaca and wool has us all ready to put it to work. Gently heathered colors give this sweater a rich feel, while the alpaca creates next-to-skin softness he’ll love. The Swedish Block pattern is charted and written out.

Valley Yarns Galanthus Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

The Galanthus is an intermediate-level men's knit sweater designed by Julie Turjoman, featuring a classic henley neckline with a ribbed button band. The sweater is sized for men but designed with proportions that appeal to multiple body types, making it a versatile unisex piece. The finished chest measurements range from 35 inches in extra small through 67 inches in size 5XL, offering extensive size coverage for various builds. The design incorporates drop shoulders and textured fabric for a rugged, timeless aesthetic suitable for cold weather wear.

Construction Techniques

The Galanthus employs a hybrid construction method combining flat knitting and circular knitting techniques. The body is worked flat in pieces and then seamed together for added structure and durability. This approach allows for precise shaping while maintaining clean, professional seams. The sleeves are worked in the round from the drop shoulders downward, creating seamless sleeve tubes. A buttonhole detail is incorporated into the henley front button band, allowing the piece to function as either a pullover or a buttoned henley. The neckband and button bands are strategically worked before sleeve attachment to minimize bulk at the neckline.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The sweater features multiple stitch patterns to create visual and textural interest. The primary fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic knit surface ideal for showcasing stitch definition. The body hem, sleeve cuffs, and henley neckband are all worked in K1/P1 ribbing, a fundamental knit-purl pattern that creates elasticity and helps edges hold their shape. The sleeves incorporate a Swedish Block stitch texture, a traditional stitch pattern that adds visual depth and dimension to the sleeve fabric while maintaining the intermediate skill level of the project.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Galanthus calls for Valley Yarns Becket, a premium blend of 50% superfine alpaca and 50% wool. This fiber combination offers exceptional softness from the alpaca while the wool provides warmth, durability, and excellent stitch definition. The yarn is supplied in 100-gram balls with 141 yards per ball. Yardage requirements range from 6 balls for the smallest size (XS) to 12 balls for the largest size (5XL), totaling between 846 and 1,692 yards depending on the finished size. The recommended colorway is Deep Woods, a rich, sophisticated shade.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires US size 9 (5.5 mm) circular needles in multiple lengths—24 to 40 inches for the body and 12 to 24 inches for sleeves—as well as double-pointed needles (dpn) for sleeve work. US size 8 (5.0 mm) circular needles and dpn are used for the ribbed hems and neckband to create proper tension in the elastic ribbing. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the specified gauge. Additional tools include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, locking markers for holding stitches, stitch holders or waste yarn for securing live stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming. Five ¾-inch diameter buttons are required for the henley front band, along with matching sewing needle and thread for secure button attachment.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch on US size 9 needles and blocked. Achieving this gauge is essential for proper fit and finished measurements. The sweater is designed to fit with 3 to 5 inches of positive ease, providing comfortable room for layering and movement while maintaining a tailored silhouette.
