Product Description
Valley Yarns Cassiopea is a relaxed and quick knit striped
pullover perfect for the weekends out and about knit in Ashfield, a silky soft
and smooth blend of fine Merino wool and bamboo viscose. The sweater features a
boxy fit with a scoop neckline in a contrasting color with short sleeves.
Cassiopea is knit flat in two pieces from the bottom up and then joined and
worked in the round to the underarms. The front and back are then divided and
worked separately to the shoulders and then seamed. The sleeve stitches are
picked up along the armhole edge and worked in the round.

Valley Yarns Cassiopea Striped Knit Sweater
What Is Being Made
The Valley Yarns Cassiopea is a stylish striped short-sleeved tee designed by Julie Turjoman. This intermediate-level knitting project features a modern scoop neckline and breezy construction ideal for transitional weather. The sweater is available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5XL, with finished bust measurements from 36 inches to 64¾ inches. The garment is designed to be worn with 4 to 6 inches of positive ease and falls at the high hip, though it can be lengthened if desired with additional yarn.
Construction Techniques
The Cassiopea employs a sophisticated bottom-up construction method that combines both worked flat and worked in the round techniques. The project begins with two separate hems that are worked flat, then joined together to work the body in the round using circular needles. This creates a seamless body with a distinctive narrow striped pattern. At the armholes, the piece is divided and worked back and forth flat to the shoulders. Short sleeves are created by casting on six stitches at each armhole, with ribbed cuffs worked separately by picking up stitches around the knitted-on sleeves.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The primary stitch used throughout the Cassiopea is stockinette stitch, which showcases the smooth hand and clean stitch definition of the yarn. The garment features a narrow striped pattern created by alternating between the main color and contrast color. Ribbed cuffs are worked on the sleeves, and the neckline is finished with ribbing as well. The construction utilizes standard knitting techniques including cast-on methods, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and the ability to pick up stitches for the sleeve cuffs.
Yarn and Materials
The Cassiopea is designed to showcase Valley Yarns Ashfield, a premium yarn blend consisting of 67% Fine Merino Wool and 33% Bamboo Viscose. This fiber combination provides a breathable, smooth texture with excellent stitch definition. The main color (MC) requires 7 to 15 hanks depending on size, while the contrast color (CC) in Sky Blue requires 2 to 4 hanks. Each hank contains 50 grams and 117 yards. The project requires US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles in 16-inch and 32 to 40-inch lengths, plus double-pointed needles, along with smaller US 6 (4.0 mm) needles for ribbed sections. Additional materials include stitch markers, stitch holders or waste yarn, and a tapestry needle for finishing.
Gauge and Finished Details
The Cassiopea is worked to a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles when blocked. This gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements and fit. The sweater's construction creates a seamless appearance in the body while maintaining clean lines at the armholes and neckline.
