Product Description

Valley Yarns Crape Myrtle is a fantastic summer wardrobe building block piece—it’s wonderful on its own or layered over tees, buttondowns, or dresses. This v-neck tank is knit in the Pima cotton and Merino wool blend Granville, giving it a soft and smooth texture, great stitch definition, and a stay-cool feel. Crape Myrtle is knit in the round from hem to underarms with slipped-stitch columns providing sleek focal points at the sides and center front and back. The front and back are completed separately and joined at the shoulder with a three-needle bind-off. An integrated trim along the neckline is extended to meet at the back and joined with Kitchener stitch before being sewn to the back neck. Choose from a trendy cropped length or swingy A-line tunic length options and the beautiful palette of colors with Valley Yarns Granville to create a go-to summer tank.

Valley Yarns Crape Myrtle Tank Top

What Is Being Made

The Crape Myrtle is a sleeveless tank top designed by Julie Turjoman, available in two distinct lengths to suit different styling preferences. Knitters can choose between a cropped version that hits at approximately 10–12 inches in length, or a tunic version extending to 17–19 inches, making this a versatile piece suitable for warm weather wear. The tank features a flattering V-neckline and is designed to be worn standalone or layered over a t-shirt for casual styling. Available in sizes XS through 5XL, the garment is engineered with 2–4 inches of positive ease for comfortable wear.

Techniques Used

This advanced beginner project employs a combination of circular and flat knitting methods to create a well-constructed garment. The body is worked in the round from the hem up to the armholes, which allows for seamless construction and efficient knitting. Once the armholes are reached, the piece is divided and worked flat back and forth from the underarm to the shoulders. Short-row shaping is incorporated at the shoulders to enhance the fit and create a more tailored silhouette. The finished garment features seamed construction where necessary, and the front V-neckline is created through a thoughtful integration of slip-stitch columns that split and form the neckline edging. The back neckband is joined at the center using Kitchener stitch, a technique that creates an invisible seam, before being sewn to the top edge of the garment.

Stitches Used

The Crape Myrtle showcases several key stitch techniques that define its visual appeal and construction. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric, providing a smooth, classic knit surface. Slipped stitches are used to create narrow, elegant columns that run vertically down the center front and back of the tank, adding visual interest and structure to the design. These slip-stitch columns are framed with purl stitches to provide additional definition and create neatly integrated edgings around the armholes and neckline. The combination of these stitch techniques produces a sophisticated, refined appearance while remaining accessible to advanced beginner knitters.

Materials and Yarn

The Crape Myrtle is designed to be knitted with Valley Yarns Granville, a premium blend of 90% Pima cotton and 10% Merino wool that provides excellent breathability and drape—essential qualities for a warm-weather tank top. The cropped version requires 3–8 hanks depending on size, while the tunic version calls for 4–10 hanks. The sample shown in cropped length is worked in color (12) Coral, while the tunic-length version is displayed in color (07) Dark Teal. Knitting is accomplished using US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 32-inch lengths, or whatever needle size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking the beginning of rounds and marking the slip-stitch detail columns, as well as a tapestry needle for seaming and finishing.
