Valley Yarns Perseus: Rainbow Striped Kids' Cardigan and Beanie Set

What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Perseus is a gender-neutral kids' cardigan and matching beanie set designed for spring and active play. The cardigan features a charming rainbow striped pattern and comes in five sizes ranging from 1-2 years to 8-10 years, with finished chest measurements from 20 inches to 28 inches when buttoned. The beanie is available in four sizes (XS through L) and is designed with a slouchy fit. The set is crafted from soft, durable Haydenville DK yarn in a main color with five coordinating contrast colors, making it an ideal gift for young children.

Techniques Used

The Perseus cardigan employs several key construction techniques that make it suitable for adventurous beginners. The cardigan is worked flat in one piece from the bottom ribbing up to the underarms, where it divides into separate front sections and a back piece. This seamless construction method reduces the number of seams and simplifies the building process. Sleeves are worked separately and then seamed into the armholes using a tapestry needle. The design incorporates buttonhole construction for the three ⅜-inch buttons that close the front bands, which overlap by 1 inch. Narrow stripes are worked around the entire body and sleeves in garter stitch, adding visual interest while maintaining ease of execution. The beanie is worked in the round, providing a different construction experience within the same project.

Stitches Used

The Perseus pattern relies on simple, beginner-friendly stitches that work together to create texture and visual appeal. Garter stitch forms the foundation of the striped pattern, creating the narrow horizontal stripes that run around the cardigan body and sleeves. Stockinette stitch is combined with garter stitch to create the main fabric, offering a smooth, classic knit appearance balanced with textured stripes. Ribbing is used for the bottom edge and cuffs, providing elasticity and a finished look. The combination of these straightforward stitches keeps the project manageable for knitters new to garment construction while producing professional results.

Materials and Yarn

The Perseus set is designed to be worked with Valley Yarns Haydenville DK, a practical blend of 60% Superwash Merino Wool and 40% Acrylic Microfiber. Each skein yields 136 yards and weighs 50 grams. The yarn requirements vary by cardigan size: sizes 1-2, 2-4, and 4-6 years require 3, 3, and 4 skeins respectively of the main color (Color 06 - Grey), while larger sizes need 5 and 6 skeins. One skein each of five contrast colors is needed: Color 20 (Persimmon), Color 16 (Royal), Color 15 (Yellow), Color 18 (Lavender), and Color 14 (Sage). The superwash merino and acrylic blend ensures the finished garment remains soft and durable through frequent washing and active play.

Needles and Notions

The pattern calls for US size 5 (3.75 mm) needles in both 16-inch and 24-inch circular configurations, plus double-pointed needles (dpn) for working the beanie in the round. A smaller US size 4 (3.5 mm) needle in 16-inch and 24-inch circular sizes is used for ribbing. The gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in the stockinette and garter stitch combination when blocked on the larger needles. Additional notions include stitch holders, stitch markers, a tapestry needle for seaming, three ⅜-inch buttons, and sewing needle and thread to match the yarn for button attachment.

Design Features

The Perseus cardigan is designed with generous positive ease of 2 to 4 inches, allowing the garment to be worn comfortably over layers and ensuring longevity as children grow. The overlapping front bands add both functional closure and a polished finish. The rainbow striped colorwork is worked in garter stitch, making it accessible to beginners while creating a visually striking design perfect for spring. The matching beanie completes the set, allowing coordinated outfits for young children. The combination of simple stitches, straightforward construction, and quality yarn makes the Perseus an excellent project for knitters building their garment-making skills.
