Product Description
Valley Yarns Plumeria is a gorgeous cowl that combines cables and lace into an elegant accessory. Beginning with a provisional cast-on, the cowl is worked flat in a cable and eyelet lace pattern and the last row is grafted to the first row to create the finished loop. Valley Yarns Huntington Splash is a soft yet strong blend of superwash Merino wool and nylon that adds pops of color over a solid base color. Knit Plumeria for a versatile accessory that will be engaging to knit and add lightweight warmth to any outfit. Cable eyelet pattern is both charted and written out.

Valley Yarns Plumeria Cowl
What is Being Made
The Plumeria is a long, luxurious cowl designed to wrap twice around the neck with generous drape. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished accessory measuring 9½ inches wide by 55 inches in circumference, offering both warmth and elegant styling versatility for any outfit.
Construction Method
This cowl is worked in one continuous piece from end to end using a provisional cast-on method. Rather than being constructed in the round, the Plumeria is worked flat on straight needles, then the short ends are grafted together using Kitchener stitch to create a seamless join. This approach allows for precise stitch control while maintaining the seamless aesthetic of a circular garment.
Techniques Used
- Cable work: The centerpiece of the design features a Cable Eyelet panel that forms the visual focus of the cowl
- Lace eyelets: Integrated throughout the cable pattern to create openwork details and visual interest
- Seed stitch borders: Frame the central Cable Eyelet panel on both sides to prevent edge rolling and provide structural stability
- Provisional cast-on: Allows live stitches to be held for later grafting, eliminating the need for a cast-on edge
- Kitchener stitch grafting: Joins the two short ends together seamlessly after the cowl reaches the required length
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern employs a 36-row Cable Eyelet stitch repeat that forms the decorative core of the cowl. Seed stitch (alternating knit and purl stitches) creates the border sections, while cable crosses and yarn-over eyelets combine within the main pattern repeat to produce texture and openwork elements. The pattern is repeated vertically until the cowl reaches its full 55-inch circumference.
Yarn and Materials
The Plumeria calls for 2 hanks of Valley Yarns Huntington Splash in color (03) River Thames, a yarn blend of 75% Merino Wool and 25% Nylon with 436 yards per 100-gram hank. This fiber composition provides warmth, breathability, and durability. The nylon content adds resilience to the cable stitches and eyelets.
The pattern specifies US 7 (4.5 mm) needles, or the size needed to achieve the required gauge of 28 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches in the Cable Eyelet pattern when blocked. Additional materials include a cable needle for executing cable crosses, waste yarn or a crochet hook (size F) for the provisional cast-on method, stitch markers to denote pattern sections, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and blocking.
Design Features
Small bursts of color interspersed throughout the Huntington Splash yarn add surface interest and visual complexity without overwhelming the cable and eyelet pattern work. The combination of cables with eyelets creates both textural depth and delicate openwork, making the cowl suitable for layering during brisk mornings while remaining elegant enough to dress up any outfit.
Difficulty Level
Rated as Intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with cable techniques, lace increases and decreases, stitch markers, and grafting. The 36-row repeat requires attention to pattern detail, and the provisional cast-on and Kitchener stitch finishing add technical elements beyond basic knitting.
