Valley Yarns Minneola Knit Pouf Ottoman
What Is Being Made
The Minneola is a spherical knit pouf ottoman designed as a functional home decor piece. With finished measurements of approximately 23 inches in diameter and 16 inches in height, this project creates an extra seat or footrest suitable for living rooms and bedrooms. The pouf is stuffed to provide firmness while maintaining comfort, making it both decorative and practical for everyday use.
Yarn and Materials
This project uses Valley Yarns Chester, a bulky weight yarn blend composed of 30% alpaca and 70% Highland wool. Each hank weighs 100 grams and provides 89 yards of yardage. The pattern requires 5 hanks each of two colors: Color A in lime and Color B in olive. The alpaca and wool blend creates a fluffy boucle texture that adds visual interest while providing a soft, luxurious feel. The yarn is available in a range of natural and rich colors to coordinate with various interior design schemes.
Needles and Tools
Knitters will need US size 11 (8.0 mm) circular needles in three different lengths: 16 inches, 24 inches, and 32 to 40 inches. Double-pointed needles in the same size are also required. Additional materials include stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing. The gauge is 8 stitches and 10 rounds measured over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked.
Knitting Techniques
The Minneola employs several intermediate knitting techniques appropriate for advanced beginners. The ottoman is worked in the round as a seamless, one-piece construction from the base to the top. The project begins with a bottom-up approach, starting from the center of the base and expanding outward with strategic increase shaping.
The base is initially worked on double-pointed needles using increase rounds to expand the circumference. As the stitch count grows too large for dpn comfort, stitches are transferred to progressively larger circular needles to accommodate the expanding width. Once the necessary stitch count is reached for the rise of the ottoman, knitters continue working even rounds in stockinette stitch to the desired height, typically between 16 and 18 inches. The top is then shaped by working from the outer edge inward using decrease shaping, with stitches transferred back to double-pointed needles as the stitch count diminishes.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch throughout most of the ottoman, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
- Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase stitch used in the base expansion rounds to shape the pouf
- Long-Tail cast-on – the method used to begin the project with 4 stitches at the center of the base
Construction Method
The pattern uses a worked in the round seamless construction method, eliminating the need for seaming. The base is built from a small center point using increase rounds that follow a mathematical progression. For example, early increase rounds establish the foundation, with subsequent rounds like "Inc Rnd 5" and "Inc Rnd 6" doubling or significantly expanding the stitch count. The structured increase pattern ensures an even, spherical shape. Once the base reaches the appropriate diameter, the cylindrical rise is worked in even rounds before the top is closed with corresponding decrease shaping.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as Advanced Beginner, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle more complex shaping. The combination of working in the round, managing multiple needle sizes, and executing increase and decrease shaping provides good skill-building opportunities while remaining achievable for experienced beginners.
Design Features
The Minneola incorporates stripes through the use of two coordinating colors from the Valley Yarns Chester line. The alternating lime and olive hues create visual interest while the fluffy boucle texture of the alpaca-wool blend adds tactile appeal. The natural fiber content ensures breathability and durability, while the bulky weight yarn allows the project to be completed relatively quickly despite its substantial finished size.
