Valley Yarns Sanbokan Pullover: Open Mesh Lace Knit Top

What Is Being Made

The Sanbokan is an intermediate-level knit pullover designed by Julie Turjoman, offered in sizes XS through 5XL with finished bust measurements ranging from 34 inches to 66 inches. This three-season topper features an allover open mesh lace stitch pattern and is designed to be worn over a camisole or long-sleeved shirt, making it a versatile layering piece that adds visual interest and flair to any outfit.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Sanbokan is constructed using a bottom-up, worked-flat approach with seaming, combined with strategic in-the-round sections. The pullover is knitted in separate pieces—front, back, and sleeves—which are then seamed together for added structure and stability. After the body seams are joined, a garter stitch neckband is worked in the round on a circular needle to minimize bulk. Sleeves are knitted-on directly from the garter stitch edges of the modified drop shoulders, allowing for seamless integration with the body.

The design incorporates cable and textural elements through bands of solid garter stitch that break up the mesh stitch panels. Deep split hems worked in garter stitch provide visual interest and help anchor the piece. The neckband and cuffs are worked in the round using smaller needles, creating defined edges that contrast with the airy lace sections.

Stitches Used

  • Mesh Lace Stitch: The primary stitch pattern creating the allover open, airy texture throughout the body and sleeves
  • Garter Stitch: Used for structural bands, split side hems, the neckband, and sleeve cuffs, providing visual breaks and definition

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Sanbokan calls for Valley Yarns Whately, a premium blend of 60% baby alpaca and 40% organic pima cotton that delivers exceptional softness ideal for three-season wear. Yarn requirements range from 8 balls for size XS to 19 balls for size 5XL, with each ball containing 164 yards at 50 grams. The sample shown is worked in color 03 Fog.

Needle requirements include US size 8 (5.0 mm) circular needles in 16-inch and 32–40 inch lengths for the main lace sections, and US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles in 16-inch and 32–40 inch lengths plus double-pointed needles for the garter stitch elements. Gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in blocked Mesh Lace stitch, and 22 stitches and 38 rows over 4 inches in blocked garter stitch on the smaller needles.

Fit and Design Details

The Sanbokan is designed with 4–6 inches of positive ease, providing a comfortable, relaxed fit suitable for layering. The modified drop shoulder construction and split side hems create a contemporary silhouette, while the combination of open mesh lace and solid garter stitch bands offers both visual sophistication and structural integrity. This intermediate-level project is perfect for knitters looking to expand their skills with lace and seaming techniques.
