Valley Yarns Horizons Scarf: Weaving Pattern Summary

What is Being Made

The Horizons Scarf is a woven scarf designed by Joanne Wood Peters that features an optical illusion inspired by perspective lines on a long, straight road. The finished scarf measures 6.5 inches wide by 64.5 inches long (excluding fringe) and is available in two distinct colorways: Twilight Horizons and Fiery Horizons. The design can be reversed at the midpoint during weaving to create the converging lane effect on both ends of the scarf.

Weaving Techniques

This pattern employs twill and plain weave structures to create the distinctive striped effect. The twill weave generates the primary visual illusion of lanes meeting in the distance, while plain weave sections provide contrast and structure. The scarf is woven on an 8-shaft loom that is at least 10 inches wide, using a single shuttle and bobbin. The weaving technique allows for optional treadling reversal halfway through the project to achieve symmetrical perspective effects on both ends when the scarf is worn.

Weaving Stitches and Sett

The pattern uses two different sett densities to achieve its visual effects. Plain weave sections are set at 24 ends per inch (epi), achieved by sleying 2 threads per dent in a 12-dent reed. Twill sections are set at 27 ends per inch (epi), using a 3-2-2-2 sleying pattern in the same 12-dent reed. The finished scarf width in the reed is 7.4 inches, with a total warp length of 3 yards comprising 187 ends (including 2 floating selvedges). The weft is woven at a consistent pick density throughout the project.

Yarn Characteristics

All yarns used in this pattern are Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel, a smooth, lustrous fiber made from 100% Lyocell. Tencel is a cellulose-based synthetic yarn known for its drape, sheen, and fluid qualities—ideal properties for creating a scarf with elegant movement and visual clarity in striped patterns. The yarn is sold on approximately 1-pound cones with a yardage of 3360 yards per pound, making it economical for larger warp projects. The combination of solid-colored and variegated 8/2 Tencel threads creates depth and visual interest in the striped design while maintaining consistent weight and texture throughout the finished piece.
