What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Aurora Scarf is a woven rectangular scarf designed for quick and easy rigid heddle weaving. This project showcases the interplay between two complementary yarns: a lacey, lightweight base paired with a vibrant, multicolored accent yarn. The design comes in two finished size options—a standard 10.25" x 53" scarf or an extra-long 10.25" x 70" version—both excluding fringe. The finished scarf produces a cozy fabric with excellent drape and hand, making it an ideal winter accessory.

Weaving Technique and Structure

This scarf uses plain weave, the most fundamental weaving structure, executed on a rigid heddle loom. Plain weave is created by alternating the passage of weft yarn over and under warp threads in a simple, interlocking pattern. The designer intentionally opened up the sett (thread density) to allow the multicolored Tahki Kaleidoscope yarn to visually dominate while the Valley Yarns Hatfield provides structure and support. The project features striped patterning created through the strategic color selection and yarn placement rather than complex weaving techniques, making it accessible for weavers of all skill levels.

Technical Specifications

Sett and Density: The scarf is woven at 10 dents per inch (dpi) in the reed and 11 picks per inch (ppi) in the weft. The width in reed is 11", with 110 ends total.

Warp Length Options:

• Standard size requires 90" of warp with 275 yards of Valley Yarns Hatfield
• Extra-long size requires 110" of warp with 337 yards of Valley Yarns Hatfield

Weft Requirements:

• Standard size uses 218 yards of Tahki Kaleidoscope (one full ball)
• Extra-long size uses 300 yards of Tahki Kaleidoscope (approximately 1.4 balls)

Equipment Needed

This project requires a rigid heddle loom at least 15" wide, a 10 dent reed, and one stick shuttle. The rigid heddle loom is an ideal tool for beginners and experienced weavers alike, offering simplicity and portability while producing professional results.

Warp Yarn—Valley Yarns Hatfield: Composed of 100% baby alpaca, this yarn provides 437 yards per skein. Baby alpaca is prized for its softness, lightweight quality, and natural luster. Weft Yarn—Tahki Kaleidoscope: This yarn combines 86% superwash wool with 14% acrylic, offering 218 yards per ball.
