Project Overview

This downloadable weaving pattern creates a sophisticated scarf inspired by traditional ikat design techniques. Designed by Wendy Bestor and woven by Leslie Ann Bestor, the scarf showcases how carefully selected yarn colors can pool together during weaving to create the distinctive blurred, tie-dye-like effects characteristic of ikat textiles, without requiring the labor-intensive resist-dyeing process.

What Is Being Made

A finished scarf measuring 9.5 inches wide by 63 inches long (excluding fringe). The scarf is suitable for everyday wear and demonstrates how color interaction in plain weave can create visually complex, patterned effects.

Weaving Technique and Structure

Plain Weave is the foundation of this project. Plain weave is the simplest and most fundamental weaving structure, created by alternating the weft yarn over and under consecutive warp threads in each row. This straightforward technique allows the beauty of the yarn colors to take center stage, as the color pooling effect emerges naturally from the strategic placement of different colored yarns rather than from complex threading patterns.

The pattern was originally designed for a 4-shaft loom but has been adapted specifically for rigid heddle looms, making it accessible to weavers with simpler equipment. This rigid heddle version maintains the visual impact of the original design while requiring less complex loom setup.

Equipment Requirements

• Rigid heddle loom with a minimum weaving width of 10 inches
• 1 shuttle and 1 bobbin, OR a double boat shuttle with 2 bobbins

Yarn and Materials

Warp Yarns:

• Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel Tonals (100% Lyocell, 3360 yards per pound): Lagoon colorway, 480 yards
• Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel (100% Lyocell, 3360 yards per pound): Aquamarine colorway, 180 yards

Weft Yarn:

• Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel (100% Lyocell, 3360 yards per pound): Aquamarine colorway, 467 yards

Both 8/2 Tencel yarns are used doubled throughout the warp and weft, meaning two strands are held together as one. This doubling technique is incorporated directly into the warping process by pulling loops through both the holes and slots of the rigid heddle, eliminating the need for re-threading before tying on.

Tencel is a lyocell fiber known for its smooth, lustrous appearance and fluid drape, making it an excellent choice for scarves. The Tencel Tonals colorway features a carefully curated palette of colors that pool and blend visually during weaving, creating the ikat-inspired effect.

While ikat is most closely associated with Indonesian textile traditions, similar resist-dyeing techniques have been independently developed and used by cultures worldwide.

Rather than employing the time-intensive resist-dyeing process, this scarf achieves a similar visual effect through color pooling—the strategic arrangement of variegated or multi-colored yarns so that similar hues align during weaving, creating the appearance of blended, soft-edged color blocks reminiscent of ikat patterns. This approach makes the striking aesthetic accessible to weavers working with commercially available Valley Yarns Tencel colorways.
