What is Being Made
The Perilous Pyramids Scarf is a woven scarf designed by Joanne Wood Peters, created using an 8-shaft loom weaving technique. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished scarf measuring 6.75 inches wide by 58 inches long (excluding fringe), making one complete scarf per project.
Weaving Structure and Technique
This scarf employs tied overshot as its primary weaving structure, a traditional technique that creates dimensional pattern effects through the interplay of warp and weft. The design was originally conceived as a 16-shaft draft and subsequently scaled down to 8 shafts, making it accessible to weavers with standard 8-shaft looms. The pattern features bold striped color work that highlights the interplay between multiple warp colors and a coordinating weft.
The weaving requires an 8-shaft loom that is at least 10 inches wide, equipped with a 12 dent reed. Weavers will need 1 shuttle and 1 bobbin to complete the project. The sett is 24 ends per inch (epi), achieved by threading 2 threads per dent in the 12 dent reed, with a corresponding pick density of 24 picks per inch (ppi) to maintain proper beat and fabric structure.
Yarns and Materials
The Perilous Pyramids Scarf is woven entirely with Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel, a 100% Lyocell yarn with a yardage of 3360 yards per pound. This fine, smooth yarn creates a lustrous, fluid fabric ideal for scarves.
Warp yarns consist of four colors in the following quantities:

- Blueberry: 162 yards
- Greyed Teal: 135 yards
- Navy: 66 yards

Pattern Details and Finishing
The pattern includes comprehensive loom dressing instructions, threading draft, and treadling draft for executing the tied overshot structure. Weavers begin by dressing the loom using their preferred method, then thread according to the provided threading draft centered for a 7.2-inch weaving width. The scarf begins and ends with 4 picks of plain weave in Navy, with hemstitching for secure edges. Approximately 8 inches of warp is reserved at each end for fringe, which is created by cutting from the back and untying the front after removal from the loom.
The main pattern repeat is woven for approximately 65 inches or to the desired length, followed by 21 final picks for pattern balance. An even beat of 24 picks per inch must be maintained throughout to ensure consistent fabric quality and the proper definition of the tied overshot pattern.
