Valley Yarns Pure Elegance Shawl
What Is Being Made
The Pure Elegance Shawl is an elegant tone-on-tone woven wrap designed by Tammy Bast of The Rogue Weaver. This refined piece combines softness and subtle shine in a finished rectangular shawl measuring 17.25" x 77" (excluding fringe). The wrap is ideal for adding a sophisticated layer to any wardrobe, with its understated elegance achieved through a harmonious color palette and luxurious fiber blend.
Weaving Techniques
This shawl employs two primary weaving techniques to create its refined appearance:
- Plain Weave: The foundational structure that provides stability and body to the wrap
- Pick-Up Lace: An advanced lace technique that creates delicate, open patterns within the weave structure, adding visual interest and airiness to the finished piece
The combination of these techniques results in a simple yet refined textile that balances structure with elegance. Pick-up lace work requires a pick-up stick (minimum 22" long) to manually lift specific warp threads, creating the lace pattern during the weaving process.
Loom and Equipment Requirements
Weavers can complete this project using one of two equipment setups:
- Single Reed Option: A rigid heddle loom at least 20" wide with a 15-dent rigid heddle reed
- Double Reed Option: Two 8-dent rigid heddle reeds for a double heddle plain weave setup
Additional equipment includes one shuttle for passing the weft and one pick-up stick measuring at least 22" in length for executing the lace pattern work.
Warp and Weft Specifications
Warp Setup: The warp consists of 296 ends measured at 3 yards in length, with a sett of 15-16 epi (ends per inch) and 12 ppi (picks per inch). When using a 15-dent reed, the width in reed is 19.7"; when using two 8-dent reeds, the width is 18.5". Weavers warp 148 slots (or 74 slots when using the double heddle method) and thread the loom following standard plain weave threading patterns, with adjustments for the double heddle setup as needed.
Yarn Requirements: Both warp and weft are worked in the same yarn for the tone-on-tone effect. The warp requires 888 yards and the weft requires 630 yards, totaling one complete cone of yarn.
Yarn Materials
The Pure Elegance Shawl is woven entirely in 2/10 Merino Tencel (Colrain Lace) in the colorway Plum. This yarn is a premium blend of 50% Merino wool and 50% Tencel, combining the warmth and elasticity of Merino with the lustrous sheen and drape of Tencel. The yarn specifications are 2800 yards per pound with 1540 yards per cone, providing excellent yardage for this project. The Merino and Tencel blend contributes the softness and subtle shine that defines this elegant wrap, while the balanced fiber content ensures both comfort and visual appeal.
Finishing Details
The completed shawl includes an 8" fringe allowance, which is tied off in small bundles at the front beam before spreading the warp. This fringe detail adds a traditional finishing touch to the refined wrap.
