Valley Yarns Modern Monk's Belt Placemats: Weaving Pattern Summary
Project Overview
The Valley Yarns Modern Monk's Belt Placemats are a set of four reversible woven placemats designed by Anita Thompson. This downloadable weaving draft offers crafters the opportunity to create elegant table linens using a classic Monk's Belt weave structure. Each finished placemat measures 12 ⅝" x 18 ¾", making them practical additions to any dining table while showcasing the beautiful interplay of color and texture that the Monk's Belt technique provides.
Weaving Technique and Structure
The Monk's Belt is a 2-shuttle weave that creates visual interest through its deceptively simple structure. This technique works particularly well with mercerized cotton yarns and allows weavers to explore numerous creative possibilities by varying colors and adjusting block lengths. The pattern is woven on a 4-shaft loom, and the resulting placemats are completely reversible, meaning both sides are equally attractive and functional. The weave combines pattern rows with tabby (plain weave) rows, creating a balanced structure with a sett of 22 ½ ends per inch in the pattern and 22 ½ picks per inch overall.
Stitches and Weave Elements
- Monk's Belt weave: The primary weaving structure that creates the distinctive patterned appearance
- Tabby weave: Plain weave rows interspersed throughout the pattern for structural stability
- Floating selvedges: Two floating selvedges are included in the warp setup for clean finished edges
- Striped color work: The pattern incorporates strategic color changes to create visual depth and interest
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project uses Valley Yarns 10/2 Cotton and Valley Yarns Valley Cotton 5/2, both 100% Mercerized Cotton yarns. The mercerized finish gives these cottons a lustrous appearance and enhanced durability, making them ideal for functional homeware pieces.
Warp Yarn: Valley Yarns 10/2 Cotton in Shell (#7503) requires 1,100 yards. This finer yarn weight (10/2 denotes 10 plies of 2-ply construction) provides the foundation for the weave.
Weft Yarn: The weft incorporates multiple colors and yarn weights for visual complexity:
- Valley Yarns 10/2 Cotton in Shell (#7503): 823 yards
- Valley Yarns Valley Cotton 5/2 in Dark Teal (#2746): 532 yards
- Valley Yarns Valley Cotton 5/2 in Madder Brown (#7382): 154 yards
- Valley Yarns Valley Cotton 5/2 in Baked Clay (#7285): 55 yards
The 5/2 cotton (5 plies of 2-ply construction) is slightly heavier than the 10/2, creating subtle textural variation in the finished fabric. Both yarn weights are sold on 1 lb cones with yardage specifications of 4200 yds/lb for 10/2 and 2100 yds/lb for 5/2.
Equipment Requirements
- 4-shaft loom, minimum 16" wide
- 3-4 shuttles for managing multiple yarn colors
- 4 bobbins for winding pattern and tabby yarns
- Temple to maintain consistent weaving width
- Off-white sewing thread (approximately 40 yards) for finishing
- 15-dent reed for achieving the specified sett
Warp and Weaving Specifications
The warp is wound to a total length of 3.5 yards with 314 ends, including 2 floating selvedges. This creates a weaving width of approximately 14" in the reed. The threading draft indicates a repeating pattern across the 4 shafts, with specific heddle counts of 74 heddles on both Shaft 1 and Shaft 2. The sett of 22 ½ ends per inch is achieved using a 2-1 threading arrangement in a 15-dent reed, meaning two ends in one dent and one end in the next dent, creating the proper spacing for this weave structure.
