Valley Yarns Silver Snowfall Scarf
What Is Being Made
The Silver Snowfall Scarf is an elegant woven scarf designed by Wendy Bestor, featuring a sophisticated light gray colorway that creates a refined winter accessory. The finished scarf measures 67.75 inches long by 8.25 inches wide (excluding fringe), making it a generous length suitable for various styling options. This design showcases the luxurious qualities of silk fiber through a carefully constructed weave structure.
Weaving Techniques and Structure
This scarf employs huck lace as its primary weave structure, a technique that brings out the unique shimmery qualities inherent to silk yarns. The huck lace structure creates an open, lacy appearance while maintaining the integrity and drape of the finished textile. The design utilizes a monochromatic approach, using the same light gray color for both warp and weft, which simplifies the weaving process while creating visual interest through the textural qualities of the huck lace structure itself.
The scarf begins and ends with 0.5 inches of plain weave at both the top and bottom edges, providing a stable foundation and closure for the lace work. The main body of the scarf features approximately 71 inches of huck lace weaving between these plain weave borders.
Equipment Requirements
This project requires an 8-shaft loom with a minimum weaving width of 10 inches. The loom is dressed with a single shuttle and bobbin for the weaving process. The threading draft specifies a repeat pattern between points A and B, repeated three times total, with the majority of heddles concentrated on shafts 1 and 2 (166 and 171 heddles respectively), while shafts 3 and 4 contain fewer heddles (18 and 36 respectively).
Yarn Materials and Specifications
The Silver Snowfall Scarf is constructed entirely from Valley Yarns 60/2 Silk, a fine, high-quality yarn composed of 100% silk. This yarn is exceptionally fine, with a yardage of 14,800 yards per pound, and is sold on 8.8-ounce cones. The specific color used is #606 Light Grey, chosen for its elegant appearance suitable for winter wear.
- Warp Yarn: Valley Yarns 60/2 Silk #606 Light Grey, 1533 yards total
- Weft Yarn: Valley Yarns 60/2 Silk #606 Light Grey, 1125 yards total
The monochromatic yarn choice simplifies the weaving process, as only one cone of silk is required to complete the entire project.
Loom Setup and Sett
The scarf is warped with a 3-yard warp consisting of 511 ends. The sett is 56 ends per inch (epi), achieved using a 12-dent reed with a threading pattern of 4-5-5 (meaning 4 threads in one dent, 5 threads in the next dent, and 5 threads in the following dent, repeating this pattern). The width in the reed measures 9.1 inches, providing the finished width of 8.25 inches after finishing.
The warp length of 3 yards accommodates the finished scarf length plus adequate allowance for loom waste and fringe. When dressing the loom, weavers should spread the warp with several picks of scrap yarn so that the ties plus the scrap yarn area equals at least 8 inches, which provides sufficient length for creating a twisted fringe at both ends of the scarf.
Weaving Process
After threading the loom according to the provided threading draft and centering for a 9.1-inch weaving width, the weaver begins by working 0.5 inches of plain weave using treadles 7 and 8. Following this plain weave border, the weaver then follows the treadling draft to execute the huck lace pattern for approximately 71 inches. The scarf concludes with another 0.5-inch section of plain weave to secure the lace structure.
Upon completion of the weaving, the weft is secured with several picks of scrap yarn before cutting from the back of the loom, leaving at least 8 inches of warp for fringe. The scarf is then removed from the loom and finished according to the project instructions.
