Product Description

The Valley Yarns #269 Quadrants Shawl is a generously sized shoulder wrap is perfect for taking the chill off of a cool spring or summer evening and works especially well with sleeveless dresses for formal or semi-formal events. Designed to produce two full shawls (while swapping colors in the warp and weft) from just two cones, this draft gives you the option to maximize your weaving output for your yarn purchase. Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel is a silky smooth yarn that features a beautiful sheen and fluid drape that creates stunning finished pieces. Note that you will need over 1 lb of each color to weave two full shawls.

Equipment: 8-shaft loom with a minimum width of 26”, 1 shuttle, 1 bobbin. 12-dent  reed highly recommended.
Warp Yarns: 2100 yards Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel (100% Lyocell, 3,360 yds/lb, sold on ~1 lb cones), shown in Eggplant and Dark Teal
Weft Yarns: 1168 yards Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel (100% Lyocell, 3,360 yds/lb, sold on ~1 lb cones), shown in Dark Teal and Eggplant
Warp Length: 3½ yards of 600 ends, including a tripled floating selvedge on one end and a doubled floating selvedge on the other.
Sett: 24 epi (2 per dent in a 12-dent reed) for main body, 36 epi (3 per dent in a 12-dent reed) for selvedges, 20 ppi
Width in reed: 24½"
Finished Dimensions: 23" x 73", excluding fringe
Weave Structure: Point Twill

Note: This pattern can be woven with either color in the warp with the other color in the weft. It is designed to pro-
duce two shoulder wraps using only two cones of yarn. After the first piece is complete, I like to knot the second warp
of the opposite color onto the first one. It’s a little quicker than starting from scratch and re-threading 600 heddles.

Valley Yarns Quadrants Wrap: Woven Shoulder Wrap with Point Twill Structure

What Is Being Made

The Quadrants Wrap is a generously-sized shoulder wrap designed by D. Pierson, measuring 23" x 73" (excluding fringe) in finished dimensions. This woven accessory is perfect for taking the chill off cool spring or summer evenings and works especially well layered over sleeveless dresses for formal or semi-formal events. The design is created using a two-color weaving technique that allows weavers to produce two complete wraps from a single warp by interchanging warp and weft colors.

Weave Structure and Techniques

The Quadrants Wrap features a Point Twill weave structure, a classic technique that creates diagonal lines and visual interest through the interlocking of warp and weft threads. This weave structure is woven on an 8-shaft loom with a minimum width of 26". The pattern employs a strategic color-interchange approach: weavers can choose either Eggplant warp with Dark Teal weft, or Dark Teal warp with Eggplant weft, creating distinctly different color effects from the same draft.

The striping technique emerges naturally from this two-color system, with the alternating warp and weft colors creating visual contrast and dimension throughout the finished piece. The wrap is designed to allow experienced weavers to efficiently produce two wraps by knotting the second warp of opposite color onto the first, eliminating the need to re-thread 600 heddles from scratch.

Sett and Weaving Specifications

Precise sett (thread density) is critical to this design's success. The main body is woven at 24 epi (ends per inch), achieved by threading 2 threads per dent in a 12-dent reed. The selvedges are woven at a denser 36 epi (3 per dent in a 12-dent reed) to create stable, finished edges. A tripled floating selvedge on one end and a doubled floating selvedge on the other provide professional finishing. The weft is beaten at 20 ppi (picks per inch).

Yarn and Materials

The Quadrants Wrap is woven using Valley Yarns 8/2 Tencel, a luxurious yarn composed of 100% Lyocell fiber. This yarn yields 3,360 yards per pound and is sold on approximately 1-pound cones. For a single wrap, weavers need approximately 2,100 yards of warp yarn and 1,168 yards of weft yarn. The finished width in reed is 24.6".

Color options include Eggplant and Dark Teal. To weave two wraps with interchanged colors, weavers should have at least a full pound of 8/2 Tencel on each color cone, with ideally a bit more to ensure sufficient yardage.

Equipment Requirements

  • 8-shaft loom with minimum width of 26"
  • 12-dent reed (highly recommended for proper sett control)
  • 1 shuttle and 1 bobbin for weft insertion
  • Warp length: 3.5 yards of 600 ends

This downloadable PDF pattern from Valley Yarns provides complete dressing instructions and threading details for weavers ready to create this elegant, versatile accessory.
