Valley Yarns Checks and Balances Runner

What is Being Made

The Checks and Balances Runner is a woven table runner designed for home decor and table settings. This finished piece measures 16 inches wide by 48 inches long and showcases the vibrant colors of Valley Yarns 10/2 Cotton through an intricate twill weave structure. The runner serves as both a functional table linen and a decorative accent piece that demonstrates advanced weaving techniques.

Weave Structure and Design Approach

This project features a twill weave with color-and-weave effect, a technique that creates visual complexity by combining structural weaving patterns with strategic color placement. Twills form the foundation for many advanced weaving structures, including crackle weave, shadow weave, and overshot patterns. By applying the color-and-weave principle to a twill base, the designer creates an appearance of greater intricacy than the underlying structure alone would suggest. The design emphasizes how fundamental twill patterns—such as houndstooth, herringbone, plaited, broken, and undulated variations—gain additional visual impact through deliberate color choices.

Techniques Used

  • Twill weaving: The primary structural technique, created by offsetting the interlacing of warp and weft threads to produce diagonal lines across the fabric
  • Color-and-weave effect: A design method that uses multiple yarn colors in both warp and weft to enhance the visual perception of the twill pattern
  • Striping: Incorporated through the sequential arrangement of four distinct yarn colors in the warp and weft
  • Twill circle principles: The design applies fundamental twill circle concepts, an imaginary clock-face system with odd and even numbers at cardinal points (1 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock) that guides the rotation of twill sequences either clockwise or counterclockwise

Materials and Equipment

Yarn: Valley Yarns 10/2 Valley Cotton, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn with a yardage of 4,200 yards per pound, sold on 1-pound cones. Four colors are used throughout the project:

  • #6256 Eggplant: 759 yards (warp), 417 yards (weft)
  • #1405 Autumn Blonde: 374 yards (warp), 265 yards (weft)
  • #7198 Burnt Sienna: 91 yards (warp), 51 yards (weft)
  • #5597 Mosstone: 39 yards (warp), 29 yards (weft)

Equipment: A 4-shaft loom with a minimum weaving width of 22 inches, 2 shuttles, and 4 bobbins (one for each color used). The warp is set at 24 ends per inch (epi) with approximately 23 picks per inch (ppi) in the finished fabric. The warp length is 2.75 yards of 459 ends, including 4 floating selvedge ends (2 at each side). The width in the reed measures 19 inches.

Designer and Source

This pattern, Draft #281, was designed by Jill Staubitz and is distributed by Valley Yarns through WEBS. The design showcases how mercerized cotton yarns in complementary colors—Eggplant, Autumn Blonde, Burnt Sienna, and Mosstone—create a distinguished and visually striking table runner suitable for both everyday use and special occasions.
